Re: The Sindarin Conversation Thread
Maethotham na Annúminas a cui vîn golinnotha! ... cui: bows, plural of cû. I prefer cû over peng just because of Dor-Cúarthol. Either is fine. :) Cû refers to any sort of bowed shape -- including a crescent moon. Peng refers specifically to the weapon. And now I have a question for you, Eruch...

Re: The Riddle Game
And what do you think of the alternate spellings, by the way? I've never understood why there is more than one way to spell it. It's because Tolkien changed his mind on how the primitive * ai diphthong came down into Sindarin. Originally, it stayed the same, so you get spellings like Aiglos . Later...

Re: The Riddle Game
Hmm, I'll have a go, if I might:
By fire forged, like frost I bite,
My haft was firm in the hand of the strong.
My snow-point strove with Sauron's heat,
But the black-mailled hands did burn my king.

I-yrch tolavorn. I-dunedain garan rinc avorn an gadti. I think thats right. Honestly I have no idea. Translation: The orcs come fast. The Dunedain have to move fast to catch them. Thanks! Here is what the words (Or so I thought) would come out to. I've begun reading an ebook (Pedin Edhellen a Sinda...

Re: The Sindarin Conversation Thread
Erucheb has skills. 8) No, Erucheb just had a lot of free time a few years ago and wasted it studying languages that no one has ever actually spoken . . . (But beautiful languages, nonetheless. ;) ) Glad to see you posting! Thanks; I try to keep track of what's going on when I have time. :) EDIT: I...

Re: The Sindarin Conversation Thread
Well, i-yrch and i-Dúnedain are definitely right. Avorn , however, means "fast" in the sense of "steadfast, enduring, lasting, firm". The word for physical speed would be lim . I'm not sure what gadti is -- 'dt' wouldn't occur in Sindarin. Is it from gad- ? I'm also not sure how...

Re: What's the difference?
Well, nowadays the difference depends on the writer. Linguistically, however, there is a real difference. "Sorcerer" is from the Latin sors , which refers to "fate" or "doom", or even a foretelling. A "sorcerer", then, is at root either a prophet or a Power; o...

Re: The Sindarin Conversation Thread
That's really nice! It's not perfect, and I think there's some Quenya mixed in, but it sounds good and is a pretty impressive go. I'm glad people are doing things like this.
