Re: Where do you Range?

I know this is an old post, but thanks for the mention, Greg! I've got to throw out there that I was calling our group Ranger Corps and using a silver knotwork oak leaf as our symbol before I knew about Ranger's Apprentice. We pull some of our inspirado from the RA series, yes, but we're also heavil...

Re: Treasures in the mountains! Coin-caches.

So I must have missed this the first time around, but hells yes! So cool. I have to say that I have often created Quests for my Rangers, and now I’ve started my own business creating custom Quests for people: Adventure Quest. Easy to remember, right? I’ve long been thinking about placing some up...

Re: Weekend in Rivendell

Whoa I need to check in here more often! I didn’t even know Kortoso had sent a general invitation to all you wonderful MERF folk. Yosemite was beautiful. Those of us who were feeling up for it climbed Glacier Trail to the top. Late start, so several of us came down the mountain in the dark! An ext...

Re: Cloak storage?

I've found it quite warm to wear it this (horseshoe) way, but it keeps it out of the way and is probably less warm than wearing it. If I have my snapsack with me, I tie my cloak to the side of it to get it out of the way.

Re: 3rd Age Dunedain Ranger - Complete Functional Kit Breakdown

I carry a tomahawk with a hammer poll, but I rarely if ever use it for firewood. If I want to split wood, I use my knife or messer with a hammer stick. Much safer, and much more precise. But I do find my hawk useful in cutting medium-heavier pieces of wood for construction or cutting fir boughs for ...

Re: New Projects!

Yes, if there is some sort of period quick-release, that would be good, so long as you could reach it back there, and so long as it was comfortable, i.e., didn't rest between the pack and your back and therefore cause unpleasant pressure point stuff.

Re: New Projects!

Considered for a while? Meaning you changed your mind? Why? If it doesn't work as well as I think it would, I would like to know now, before I make the damn thing!! I've used shoulder bags this way, and it seems to work, but haven't yet made my official "Ranger" version yet. Did you have h...

Re: New Projects!

I have one suggestion that may be useful. Instead of a classic backpack, with two straps, use something of a similar size, but fashioned more like a shoulder bag: with a single strap attached between the two top corners. Now, the wearing of it: Slip your upper body entirely through the strap, so tha...

Re: Ranger Corps

Is your sister Liz? She's the only one I know in the Missoula Chapter. She hasn't told me anyone else's names yet. I think I sent her the link for this forum. A Spokane chapter would be cool! PM me and we'll talk more about it :)

Ranger Corps

I've started a Ranger group in my local area, and the mania is quickly spreading. I've gotten a LOT of interest in what we're doing from people all over the place, and despite our relative infancy (the group has only been active a little over a year), we've got new chapters springing up in the Bay a...

Re: Sword Preference?

My Tramontina has a heftier, more thrust-capable blade than my Legitimus Collins, but Hackles (yep, it's earned itself a name) has much higher sentimental value, so until I get the light dao/falchion hybrid from a friend of mine, I'll stick with Hackles. I've even considered having Hackles re-forged...

Re: Let's clothe a ranger.

A good place to get garment leather on the cheap is second-hand stores. Get leather jackets in earth tones for $20 or less per jacket, take them home and cut them up. Get two and you should have enough leather to make a two-toned jerkin. Often the basic shape of the body of the jacket can be used fo...
