Re: Keeping Watch
That was the passage I was thinking of, thanks for looking it up! So, for time keeping...candle clocks and hourglasses seem to be out, but what about some sort of water clock? I'd be curious to see how large a container it would take to measure one hours worth of time, or even if it's something that...

Re: Keeping Watch
Ah, the fond(ish) memories of sleeping one hour on, one hour off in a two man fighting position. You run into a lot of issues pulling guard duty overnight, though as has been stated, the more people you have the easier it gets. The biggest issue is time keeping, followed closely by noise and light d...

It’s a 3 3/4†by 2 3/8†tin, and I used 1/2†copper pipe for the candle holder.Cimrandir wrote:Cool project! It doesn’t seem like the YouTube link is working so I’ll just ask if the Altoids tin is one of the larger varieties? Or is rather compact in the small tins?

Re: New Boots!
Excited to see this project! I've revitalized several pairs of military boots in the past, but never to the extent that you are planning. I remember talking to a moccasin maker once who said he could rebuild and resole a pair two to three times before they had to be replaced, which gave me a little ...

Re: Candle Lantern
I used to have one of these, they ar epretty handy. There is another historical one, and I can't seem to find the vendor that had it, but it had a third piece that had a mica sheet that acted as a pane/wind shield. Edit, found it. http://www.colonialmarket.com/wmgatliff/sale.html Ooh, I like that.....

Re: Candle Lantern
That looks great, Brian! Do you have any other photos of how it's constructed? I can afford to buy a commercially produced version, but I'm a stickler for hand-making my own kit stuff, if at all possible...I'd like to try my hand at making one. :P Rob I shot a video of the build, but it is a little...

Re: Trying to make a Dwarven Tinderbox
also, any ideas about a kind of (easy to make) catch I could put on the sliding lid to keep it closed? I had intended there to be enough resistance to keep it closed on it's own, then I think I went a bit mad with the chisel  so if I tip the box it just slides out What about something like...

Candle Lantern
I started to post this right away, but decided instead to take the time to get caught up on my forum reading first. Wouldn’t you know it, the Edge of the Wild newsletter for the summer had a review of the very candle lantern that I based mine off of! Guess I wasn’t too far off base with thinking...

Re: Trying to make a Dwarven Tinderbox
The leather loop is a great idea, not only will it give you insulation, but it will make it easier to manipulate and index the damper as you are putting it in the box. Great work as always! When Greg was talking about the technique of holding the tinder on the box to blow into flame reminded me of K...

I don't have any other videos of it yet, but it will definitely be featured in the future!Haradir wrote:That's quite incredible! I love the look of it. To echo Greg, that thing is an heirloom now! Do you have anymore videos of it in action?

Re: Many ways to carry stuff - Experimentation
Found it! I was looking in a book by Richard Graves, but it seems I was looking in the wrong place. This is from Bushcraft: The Ultimate Guide to Survival in the Wilderness : "The two binding cords pass through the loops of the swag strap and are tied tightly about 6″ to 8″ [15 to 20 cm] fr...
