Re: Safety for footweary Hobbits

I agree with you there. There's way to much stuff out there for me to be walking around with no shoes. I realize that feet can be toughened up to a certain degree, but there are too many variables out there for my taste. I love being able to feel the ground, but I get plenty of that through my mocca...

Re: Safety for footweary Hobbits

I'll second what Odigan said, the original Five Fingers were designed to give you a barefoot experience, and they delivered. I have some KSOs from back before they were popular, and they are great. Excellent grip on all surfaces, and you can feel the blades of grass when you walk. If you get a set o...

That's some good stuff on his site. That second from the bottom second from the right sword looks like the old Black Knightly sword MRL used to carry. I loved that sword!

Re: Gimli's Corslet = Dwarven Plate Armour?

You may very well be correct as it is used interchangeably throughout history and literature. I has been a great excersise to dig into the different meanings but in the phrase: "So, in 'The King of the Golden Hall' chapter, it says that gimli needed no maille, because he already had a 'short c...

Re: My Kit (picture heavy)

yeah I'm diabetic and have serious lower back problems.. so I NEED the thicker soles and the inserts hehe. And it sucks because I used to go barefoot all the time growing up. I even have to wear at least socks or slippers indoors, as I have to be careful of my feet. I hear you there. Yes, vibram so...

Ernildhir wrote:I like your quiver modification for tarp-hanging. Do you basically just fold your blanket and drape it over the lace beneath the quiver?

I hadn't actually thought of doing it that, but it's a good idea. I usually just roll it up and tie it hanging underneath the quiver.

Re: Interesting knife design for a Ranger

I like it! I wouldn't worry about the bone at all. Have you ever worked bone before? That crap is tough! Also, as a long standing watcher of the MRL catalog, I also do not recognize this knife. Too bad, it's a beauty.

Re: My Kit (picture heavy)

It's amazing how having a single piece of leather as the sole of your shoe makes you slow down as you go through the woods. Your feet do get used to it, but it completely changes the way you move...much quieter for starters!

Re: My Kit (picture heavy)

Brian, On your belt you have an antler tip hanging down by the buckle, What is this used for, is it a whistle or tool, a decoration? I could see a lot of uses for something like that and it along with the rest of your kit is very handsome and woodsy. Your stitching is very nicely done and the tooli...

Re: My Kit (picture heavy)

Also, as a side note, can you give an idea of how you did the round braid for the strap on your waterskin? I've never been able to figure that out, myself. It's not terribly difficult. There are several decent tutorials online such as this one http://www.carbidecamps.net/CombinedActivities/Lanyards...

Awesome! Keep it up!

As I reread the LOTR again, I'm taking more notice of the kit descriptions thanks to this :)

My Kit (picture heavy)

As requested (and promised) here are some pictures of my kit. Most of the things I use self made, with a few exceptions, and everything that I make I use while camping. I had someone approach me once and ask what weathering technique I used on my leather...my answer was "hard use." We'll s...

Love it! I like that belt mounted draw string pouch with the flap. I was just looking at making something similar myself...I might add some heavier leather to reinforce the belt loop though. Very cool stuff.

Re: What do you do with a broken longbow?

I had a shortbow I was making come apart on me one time. I took the best limb off of it and turned it into an atlatl. Worked really well, and looked nice too. I'll see if I can dig it up to take a picture of it.
