Re: Nemo's Dwarf Kit

That's the one! I was real excited when that thread appeared. Whenever I'm camping, with modern stuff, for work, or for fun using period gear, I always want to just take what I can fit on my person. I hate taking forever to unload a car. I'm glad I finally found a way to carry everything on my back ...

Re: Nemo's Dwarf Kit

I wanted to stay away from leather as much as possible not for any practical reasons or anything in the source material but because of an idea I have about Dwarves that they would like to use the most crafted materials possible, so woven textiles would be a more time/skill intensive item than leath...

Re: Nemo's Dwarf Kit

Thanks! There's no explicit reference as far as I know; I also just liked the idea of dwarves with external frame packs. I need to go back through the Hobbit and jot down every reference to dwarf equipment. The only one that springs to mind about packs is the part in Mirkwood when they take one of t...

Nemo's Dwarf Kit

So, I've been meaning to do it for a year, but I finally got my Dwarf gear up and running. For a bit there, I was waffling on the time period for it. I didn't know whether I wanted to do Second Age from Khazad Dum, who was trained by Elves of Eregion in woodcraft and fought in the Last Alliance, or ...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

I haven't with the walking axe but I have with a tomahawk I got from him. It held up well (no damage even when using it on some unbelievably hard wood. Wish I knew where the campground got that firewood), but I wouldn't want to do any heavy chopping with the walking axe. It would be too tough on the...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

Cool! I started a trend! Your axe looks even nicer than the one that he made me. I'm almost jealous! I guess with all the new dwarves running around I'm finally going to have to finalize my kit. Weapons and garb are pretty much squared away but I'll have to finish putting my pack together and make a...

Re: Oversized boots for a Dwarf persona

So unfortunately I don't have any pictures cause I rushed a pair out for a specific event and they look terrible and I haven't worn them since, but I made a pair of bulky, very Dwarven looking boots by just covering modern hiking boots in leather. I did it using this method: http://forums.armourarch...

Re: Frothgar and Nemo's camp

Farodel, we're not going to be able to make it out to another event so soon. We both work for the same company, so it's already tough to get the same days off, and there's a huge event this weekend. We might be able to make it to Rag, maybe. Taurinor, all of the blankets and the hide are very heavy....

Frothgar and Nemo's camp

This weekend was a Dagorhir event, Siege of the Azure Castle. It was an amazing event, tons of great fighting in a paintball arena complete with a castle and a village. Frothgar and I took our period kits to camp in (there were cabins available, but who wants to sleep in a cabin?), and we found a ni...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

The haft is ash. He had oak, ash, and carved bunchberry, which I'd never heard of but apparently it makes the best walking sticks in Europe. The ash handles have the option of being plain or being oiled and burned to preserve them, and the bunchberry seems to automatically come with these really int...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

Alright! I found an awesome custom smith on Etsy: AdiThiel. Guy's amazing. He's a Hungarian dude who researches and lectures about metallurgy and smiths using the techniques he talks about in his free time. He had a norse-esque axe head with a spike at the back that would have been perfect if it jus...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

That Ciupaga looks like pretty much exactly what I'm going for. Spike on the bottom, easy to hold and carry. That's a great jumping off point for designs. The tube for carrying the tomahawk is a result of the additional stuff I added to the handle of the tomhawk. I'll post some pictures of it when I...

Re: Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

The reason for the adze and pick was to emulate a climbing axe: http://www.moma.org/collection_images/resized/939/w500h420/CRI_210939.jpg They were invented in the 19th century, apparently, but the principle behind them could be translated to more medievalish stuff. The idea behind using it for rang...

Help with weapon/tools for a dwarf ranger

I'm going to make a bigger post about this later, but my current persona project I'm working on is a dwarf ranger that is more Tolkien-inspired than my normal Ranger gear. I'll go into more detail when I make the main post (all of the gear I currently have for it isn't with me right now so I can't t...
