Re: 2018-19 Hawking Season
How does this even work? You see a hawk (and determine from its size or feathers that it is a juvenile?) and do a magic dance to make it come to you so that you can put a bag on its head and bind it? You drive aroun in a van that has 'free rabbit entrails' on the side? I remembered, Greg answered a...

Re: First Trek of Fall, '18
Oh that looks like a grand time! ... the streambed looks familiar. I take it that's a regular haunt? Most of the hills in this part of the world (from Wisconsin and Michigan all the way down to Kentucky) are usually terminal moraines- the detritus bulldozed at the front edge of the glaciers and the...

Nice! Where was this at?
I can't wait for solid fall weather- I've got a dozen projects at the Inn that I've been avoiding due to the heat and humidity.

Re: Giant Celtic Cross Found Hidden in Irish Forest
A few years back, they found a similar thing in the forest in Germany.
Unfortunately, it was aspens planted in the shape of swastikas on a hillside covered in pines.

Re: Dwarven Bounder?
Before the modern method of dividing real estate on a grid, the method was known as 'metes and bounds.' Some US states still have such measurements from colonial times. "Beating the bounds" was a way for mostly illiterate communities to become aware of real estate divisions and to pass alo...

Re: A bit of Shire goodness
I've heard of the "Game of Thrones" cookbook, and mostly heard good things about it. I have to work on my pie dough, though. When I make chicken pot pies, I usually cheat with store-bought dough. I have that cookbook! I'll have to post some recipes and my results. The Honeyed Chicken reci...

Re: New Tolkien exhibit in Oxford and beautiful catalog book
I got the catalog book yesterday. It's a beauty, with high resolution reproductions of letters, maps, and drawings on card-stock paper pages. One thing that surprised me are reproductions of newspaper pages that Tolkien doodled on with colored pens. Very psychedelic. The book, shipping, and handling...

I think the pace has picked up.Elleth wrote:Oh.... that does look interesting!
Seems there's a lot of really intriguing things coming out from the archives lately: am I just only paying attention lately, or has the pace picked up a bit?
I ordered the catalog today. $75 with taxes and shipping. Whew.

New Tolkien exhibit in Oxford and beautiful catalog book
Like most here, I'm not going to be in Oxford any time soon. However, I am going to get a copy of the exhibit catalog, which has things like color reproductions of the first map of the Shire, etc. https://io9.gizmodo.com/j-r-r-tolkiens-archives-come-alive-in-this-stunning-bo-1827640174 http://press....

Re: Has anybody read this?
It was me highly recommending it. It's a father and son team. Dad is a botanist, son is an artist. The illustrations are woodcuts (or in that style), reminiscent of Tolkien's art style. The information is straight on Botany 101 for Middle-earth. You not only get a listing of every plant mentioned in...

Re: Possibilities...
I had forgotten about the Dragons Wood Inn. Until very recently the ability to go much beyond my own region was essentially impossible. I am only just beginning to venture out again, now we have good vehicles, the children are grown, and things have settled some. I shall keep an eye out for doings....
