Re: Spring Indy Moot - March/April
Straelbora, there definitely would be. My work is on a 1,000 acre site with 30 miles of trails that constantly intertwine and such. If you could guarantee your time of arrival on a particular day, I could place you at the appropriate car-accessible part of the facility for where we'd be, and we'd s...

Re: Spring Indy Moot - March/April
I'd love to make it, but I don't think I can get away for the whole time. My wife's a professor and teaches Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I could maybe get away one day, more likely a Wednesday or Thursday, but you'd be on the trail and there'd be no way to cross paths with you, would there?

Re: Medieval Taylor's Assistant: Making Common Garments
Thank you for sharing this wealth of information! I will certainly be trying one of the undershirts for my next project. Those mittens also look very interesting, though I don't think I have a suitable material that would allow them to perform as well as they should. The instructions seem to sugges...

Re: edible whatsits
Down here in Dixieland, we have every sort of edible animal you could want: squirrel, possum, raccoon, deer, snakes galore, fish, turkey, and the list could go on and on. Some things you might think aren't edible really are with a little processing, for example, stinging nettle is similar to turnip...

Re: Period mountaineering?
The closest thing to a "period" climbing harness I can really think of would be a swiss seat or studebaker wrap...one of which is shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssmYruwGTzM I'll echo Eledhwen's statements...no way in hell should any of you try either of them with non-modern ro...

Re: Gimli's Corslet = Dwarven Plate Armour?
The Russ and the Persians also used masks in combat. I am working on a semi open facemask/visor for my heavy combat SCA helm that is based on the "Odin Mask". (I just could not resist the knotted beard work!) New to the site and poking around some threads, so I just came across ...

Re: Throwing axes and the like...
All axes... I personally prefer a javelin. While not as multi-purpose as an axe, I think they work a lot better for throwing in a combat situation, where the enemy is at a constantly varying distance. Ones of this calibre (see below) or heavier do an excellent job at armour penetration, and can dou...

Re: 20 asst'd Blades
For the FS-8 axe, does it look like the handle will have to be completely replaced, or can a wedge or shim be used to repair it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Norman short bows?
The first documentation which is certainly the Bayeux tapestry being was the inventory of the Bayeux Cathedral in 1476. Because of that, we really can't say for certain who made the tapestry or where it came from originally. What is definite is that it was created in many separate panels by the spe...

Re: The Children of Hurin
Children of Hurin was and is, absolutely spectacular. Definitely agree on the oral tradition. Lots of good kit references all throughout. I was always intrigued by the reference to a unique type of Dwarves (the name of which escapes me) which shared a home with Turin and his company for awhile. Tho...

I'm looking into getting a dehydrator to partially dry-out my own meats and such. I'll look into Cabelas. You're right...refrigeration kinda screwed us. Once you get one, you'll go a little nuts. I've had one for about 4 years. I dry stuff and then keep it in the fridge in ziploc bags and it keeps ...

Greg- I'm new to the forum and live nearby in Indianapolis. I've been here a few years, but haven't had a chance to hike or camp in Brown County. If you'd like to coordinate for a hike to take more photos, we could put something together. I even have an Elvish-looking hafling (my half Polish, half C...

Thanks Ken. I'm originally from Detroit, and in large part thanks to Prof. Tolkien's writing, gained an early love for languages. This lead me to become an exchange student in high school. Over the last 30 years, I've lived in Paraguay, Russia, the UK and the Dominican Republic, and have visited eve...
