Re: PJ's lack of Preperation

I actually have gained some respect back for PJ that he came out publicly that he messed up. Good job PJ.

Re: Rope?

A few more questions for everyone: What length would you guys recommend? How much do you carry, yourselves? Does anyone have any recommended lengths for something like rigging a hammock? And lastly, if I'm going through Hemp Traders, which size/diameter would you recommend I purchase? I need to pla...

Re: Rope?

Ineffableone: you're like a bloody encyclopedia for this stuff, haha. I'd love to make my own rope, but at the moment I'm willing to just make the purchase, because I'm in a little bit of a time-crunch. It helps that my brother makes rope, so I pick up a lot of info from him. As well I do a lot of ...

Re: New Ranger. New bow.

Sounds like you got it under control, and yes Tite Bond 2 or 3 should work quite well. I look forward to hearing how it goes, and seeing some pictures of the results. Good luck and remember to plan and take your time, advice I failed to follow a few times when doing my Penobscot bow build not too lo...

Re: ARROWS AND HOOKS

The only times I have seen a Ranger was while in parking lots, or official camp grounds. Never out in the woods. Even when I worked trail maintenance I never saw Rangers out on the trails. You know I have never even thought about this issue. I commonly take broad heads and blunts in my quiver when I...

Re: New Ranger. New bow.

What to back a bow with can be narrowed down by why you want to back your bow. Are you backing to gain poundage? Then you will want to back with wood, sinew, fiberglass, rawhide, or other heavier duty materials. Are you just trying to strength the bow because it has grain run off? Lighter materials ...

Re: Rope?

want to procure myself some decent rope, with which I can tie up shelters, or even hang up a hammock for myself if I so choose. What would you guys recommend for this task? I'm honestly not sure where to look. Yeah, I could use paracord or something of that nature, but I'd really like it to at leas...

Re: Rope?

The usual suspects of Hemp, Jute, Sisal, and one I did not see mentioned here yet Manila. Are all typical historical natural fiber ropes. Each have their pros and cons. There is also Flax and Coir rope as well as cotton and Hessen. As for making your own rope from natural materials, you can use anyt...

Re: Re-hilted Sword

So the blade is not spring tempered then and took a set. Have you tried to bend it back? This sort of set is common with non spring tempered blades. Japanese cutting competitions actually employ professionals to straighten swords for the competitors. The blade is not necessarily ruined. Just needs c...

I have yet to get into string making, it is on my list of archery knowledge to get proficient at though.

I imagine someone here does have the knowledge and skills though.

Re: Help With My First-Ever Ranger Trek! (believe it or not)

You might also try sleeping in similar conditions to how you'll be sleeping on the trail, a few days before your outing, with the goal of 'acclimating' your body to sleeping slightly uncomfortably. You might even stretch it out over a week or so--first night or two, sleep in your bed without a shee...

Re: Canoe Considerations

Motivation: this video log of a 17 day solo canoe trip into Savant Lake by one Wintertrekker (YouTube handle) was made in 2013. He has a fair few wilderness trip logs on his page, but this one I keep watching. What lovely country! It has about 16 parts though. Now do it in Ranger kit. ;) https://ww...

Re: Help With My First-Ever Ranger Trek! (believe it or not)

Anothing thing worth mentioning...STRETCH. Hike for ten minutes to warm up, and then stop to stretch; legs, arms, and back. Focus especially on the legs. Do it again before you sleep, and again, after a quick warmup walk, when you wake. You'll start your next day back at work without a limp. Very g...
