Re: Thoughts on bottles?
A stoneware bottle was not an unheard of thing. Jas Townsend sells one: http://www.townsends.us/stoneware-beer-bottle-p4179-p-1322.html http://lghttp.68199.nexcesscdn.net/806667C/Magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/800x800/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/p/-/p-4179.jpg I don't know about wi...

Re: The Kerchief/Shemagh
I thought that we had another thread where we explored kerchiefs and the like. But this topic will do. As you know, I am across the sea now, in a tropic land. Daytime temperatures have been rising to 100F regularly. I have a cotton Japanese tenugui as a memento of one of my other adventures. I keep ...

Looks like walnut hulls can be used, though I've not tried it:

Re: Away to Valinor!
I'd always assumed without thinking about it that the tengwar was inspired by (but not based on) Hebrew, based primarily on how it handles vowels - but also on its brushstroke form, the fact modern Hebrew was being reconstructed about the same time Tolkien was working on the tengwar, and that I'd h...

Re: Away to Valinor!
Hey guys, I'm here learning the Thai language. So funny, when it's transliterated into Roman letters, it looks like something that Lovecraft would dream up. But looking at the letters of the Thai alphabet (which apparently is supposed to be referred as an "abugida"). I was at a B...

Away to Valinor!
Well, I have chosen to retire in Thailand and I am leaving next week. What of the Ranger Kortoso? Could he have been invited to join the Elves in Valinor? There's little enough need for fantasy there. I will be living in a 700-year-old walled city among a people magical (or strange and enchanting an...

Re: Flavors of Ithilien
What Greg said. Aside from the Ravenna influence on Minas Tirith, I always envisoned the Southern Kingdom of Gondor as the Byzantine Empire. Of course, Gondor never fell. The herbs mentioned fit that milieu perfectly. OT: I didn't know about that Ravenna connection. I wonder if Ravenna's fateful hi...

These National Parks Could Be in Middle Earth
https://earther.com/these-national-parks-could-be-in-middle-earth-1822733939 Dan Bell is a biologist with a knack for map-making. Bell doesn’t draw just any old map, though. He likes to draw national park maps, and he pulls inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien. Anyone who’s read The Lord of the Rings...

Re: Flavors of Ithilien
It's interesting that these are largely Mediterranean native plants. Many have been cultivated in English gardens for some time, but I suppose that the author was intending to indicate that the heroes were not in their home lands anymore. In California, it's not hard to find similar species in the w...

Re: 3-D archery targets
Orc targets are all fine, as long as you don't publicize it too much. Archery clubs and the online social network tend to get their knickers twisted in a knot when archers are shooting at humanoid targets. There's a range near me that sponsors a dinosaur hunt, with life-size(?) foam targets and such...

Re: On Helmets
I think a Ranger would be better off with a round cap without the nasel. I've worn a nasel while shooting and it throws off your depth perception. With a lot of practice you may be able to ignore the nasel but I prefer a non nasel helm, either round or conical. IMO the round is more comfortable and...
