ME Rangers on Youtube
Hello! I believe we may have had a thread on this previously, but all things fade and pass I reckon. Here I've found a new channel by a young man named Kramer. If it's you and you're here among us, well, then, bravo! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6gaTzrk--zPutyB6vIxlBg/videos He doesn't sing out...

A good and proper hovel
Apologies if this has been shared previously. I initially looked askance at this due to their reliance on long saws, but otherwise, it's a lovely and reasonable reconstruction of what a Saxon or early medieval house would have looked like.

Re: Weekend in Rivendell
Would be awesome to find more Rangers around here. I'm only about 3 hours from Yosemite definitely down to make the drive if there's another. Whoa I need to check in here more often! I didn’t even know Kortoso had sent a general invitation to all you wonderful MERF folk. So...I know Kortoso is li...

Ranger training in Thailand
While I've been living in Thailand, my Ranger brother Peter came and looked after my cat for about a month. We took the opportunity and practice some Ranger battlefield skills. Nothing too serious.

What a joy to see a tree you planted growing healthy and strong many years later.

Re: Happy Birthday Kortoso
Thank you very much, mellonin! I totally forgot. Actually, one of my "lancer" Rangers has come to visit, oversee my cat and learn Thai massage recently. We've explored some of the stranger oddities here in Chiang Mai. I've been living a very nice retirement life here in Thailand, you must ...

A young Viggo if not a young Aragorn
I ran across this recently. It's a collection of pictures of Viggo Mortensen while he was youngster. I'm sure the Amazon show runners, if they're smart, look to this as a template for casting young Aragorn. https://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/58048827.html https://imgprx.livejournal.net/48ef06d893...

Re: Where to Trek
I had done some related research on this a while back. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the USA, often under the rubric of National Forests, allows knives and axes (apparently required for camping) but not swords. Obviously if you're carrying a bow, you may be suspected on hunting, so it may be sm...

Re: trousers history question...
It's a very good question, and as a former Viking-Age reenactor, I asked myself this question many times. The "reenactorism" assumes that the hose/braies combination was brought into Britain by the Normans, but that's conjecture. It's often assumed that since "braies" came from t...

Dynasty Forge Bastard!
Matt Easton reviews Dynasty Forge's Bastard Sword:
It's an Oakeshott type XVIa by the way, which AFAIK is the type for Strider's sword in Jackson's LOTR, or at least this is type used for practical replicas of the movie sword.

So the oxblood strap also forms a keeper for the by-knife too? I like that touch.

Re: Viking-era scabbard attachments
I don't see it that way. Modern "wall hanger" swords are often sold with vertical suspension systems, basic similar to what you'd see on a knife. It doesn't require too much extra thought or material, and 99% of the purchasers will just hang the swords on the wall, or show up at the office...

Re: Water Treatment on the Trail
This is a topic much discussed in my old Bushcraft group in California. To wit, I found an interesting article suggesting that indeed, the further you get away from people and cattle, the safer your water may be. Backcountry water quality tests are good news for campers and if you want to dig deeper...
