Re: Rider of Rohan (or Foot Soldier of Rohan)

Kudos! Full marks on acquiring a horse, there, lad! Good on you. The coif, or biggins, worn as a regular hat rather than something under a helmet, is something from a later period than Anglo-Saxon/Viking era, from what I recall. I know this is a fantasy world, but the Rohan are based on early Anglo-...

Re: Amazon Series

Brethren, I do indeed remember many decades ago the grouchy talk surrounding announcements that someone named Peter Jackson was filming the legend.
That didn't turn out too badly did it now?

Anyway, here is more news and speculation:

Re: Home made forge question

One thing that slows a lot of would-be smiths, is the assumption that the anvil needs to be a huge block of iron or steel.
The Vikings often made do with something little more than a iron spike driven into a heavy stump.

Re: A strange fabric... Ramie?

Nope. My friends in Regia Anglorum, think that fabric made from nettle fiber was commonly used.

Young Ranger

This young fellow (I know not his age, nor real name) had taken upon himself the banner of the Middle-Earth Ranger.
Can we give this guy some encouragement and support?

Re: Amazon Series

It appears that Amazon's vaunted LOTR series will (at least at first) focus on a young Aragorn. I foresee a new crop of Rangering fans.

Re: Faramir's Nail-Knife: Essential Kit or Ithilen field mod?

What comes to mind for me (mostly due to the usage rather than the name) is a small "patch-knife" as used by mountain men.

A stoneware bottle was not an unheard of thing. Re: The Kerchief/Shemagh

I thought that we had another thread where we explored kerchiefs and the like. But this topic will do. As you know, I am across the sea now, in a tropic land. Daytime temperatures have been rising to 100F regularly. I have a cotton Japanese tenugui as a memento of one of my other adventures. I keep ...

Re: Away to Valinor!

I'd always assumed without thinking about it that the tengwar was inspired by (but not based on) Hebrew, based primarily on how it handles vowels - but also on its brushstroke form, the fact modern Hebrew was being reconstructed about the same time Tolkien was working on the tengwar, and that I'd h...

Re: Away to Valinor!

Hey guys, I'm here learning the Thai language. So funny, when it's transliterated into Roman letters, it looks like something that Lovecraft would dream up. But looking at the letters of the Thai alphabet (which apparently is supposed to be referred as an "abugida"). I was at a B...
