Re: Treasures in the mountains! Coin-caches.
Frustrated that I'm so late to find this thread. Also a bit miffed at Manveruon for not mentioning it but it's not like we haven't lives outside of ranging in Colorado. That said, I found this thread because I was thinking back on a past time I shared with my kiddoes back in the day. Letterboxing. S...

Re: Water Treatment on the Trail
Our most recent local ranger hike was three folks with two identical (sawyer mini) filters between us. Good thing two of us were set as one set kinda failed. However, that got me thinking about all the various, and best, ways to make water safe on the trail. The Sawyer's are great for our day hikes,...

Re: Barrel-shaped leather costrel build (pic heavy!)
I'm all about using what you have on hand. I feel there's a truth to that even when it makes it less than perfectly historically accurate. I guarantee they also did the exact same thing of using what they had on hand.... Just because the surviving examples was thicker... It may be the reason they D...

Re: Barrel-shaped leather costrel build (pic heavy!)
I've been absent for...a very long time but coming back and catching up is so exciting, especially because of posts like this! I've wanted to do a barrell costrel for ages. Welcome back! It’s an interesting build - definitely some pros and cons compared to a two-piece flacket. For historic accura...

Re: Waterproofing Leather?
Really digging the recipes for more historical versions in here. I tend to use mink oil almost exclusively because it is, in my opinion, incomparably waterproofing without sacrificing suppleness which makes it ideal for boots/shoes and gloves. Adding oils to beeswax helps retain the softness but nev...

Re: Lessons from the farm (a bit dark, discretion advised)
Well, this takes me back. I grew up on a cattle and sheep ranch in Idaho. Most of the animals were sold off to butchers and slaughterhouses, but we took care of our own needs right there. I'm grateful for the experience and valuable lessons I learned, but I'm also very grateful that I can by my meat...

Re: Elysium Adventures in CO
I'd love to see this company take off. Even if their initial focus was on "Armchair Larpers", the potential is great. I'd rather see what they are really going to offer, go through a weekend with them, then offer input on what I would like to see. Maybe they can set up different types of i...

Re: A Birthday Wish to a new member - MasterStrong
Thank you, all!
I've been off the forum since before my birthday, as I had a slew of fortunately expected houseguests and then my first full ranger trek with Manveruon this past weekend. This is a lovely thing to return to, indeed.

Re: What defines a Ranger?
I tend to agree with the guerrila fighting concept being used by rangers, though I feel that is more due to their limited and far flung numbers. They seem well trained for traditional combat when they come together. Maybe a case can be made for them being trained as a form of Special Ops at some poi...

I can't help but want to try this project, and seal the result with pitch and beeswax to make a drinking vessel. Unfortunately, I don't have the easiest access to birch bark, either.

Re: What defines a Ranger?
Heehee! Now this is a discussion I can sink my teeth into All excellent posts, by the way. One simple question regarding a ranger carrying weapons of combat vs. hunting. If, as a ranger, you are venturing out and want to be as prepared as possible for any circumstance but also not be overly encumber...

Re: Musing on Ranger Harper/Bards
I'd venture that there may be little mention of bards in the stories of Middle Earth because the tales and songs we have are from a bard. There is certainly no shortage of songs in Tolkien's works, so music was an important part of the culture. If anything, it seems to me that the onus would be on t...
