Re: Rangers report!
Also essential...frustratingly essential, apparently, as they've got me working 6-7 days a week. However...there are perks. Took this shot at work today, and if that doesn't put one in mind of Eriador, I don't know what will.

Re: Dakota Firehole Experiment Results
After finding the scapula a bit flimsy, I ordered up a Niwaki digging knife. https://i.imgur.com/eHGas7l.jpg?1 It's serviceable, and looks a lot more period than the ones with logo-etched stainless blades and serrated edges. I subdued the handle a bit with black walnut minwax stain, and am making a ...

Re: On the Breaking of Blades, or: A Negative Result is Still a Result
So, just over two years later, It took me a whole day to make the scabbard. I'd love some advice, though. https://i.imgur.com/6NRCFWw.jpg?1 Here it is. Rather than wrap it, I think I'll leave it as wood grain. I like the look. I've used black walnut to match the rest of the wood in my kit. I started...

Re: All plants, animals, food, etc. mentioned in The Hobbit
So I've been pondering this. I've had good success baking in the backcountry with breads both short and long as the poem says, but would/could I do it with archaic techniques? A pearlash, potash or soda ash could be made or acquired. Would pack similarly to a spice, I imagine. But what about acid? V...

Re: Heat-related illness
In 2005 I attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia. A traditional part of this event is a speech by the president of the United States. All 40,000 scouts in attendance marched to the big amphitheater for the speech, but looming thunderstorms made it too risky, so we all marched back to o...

Re: Hypothermia
EDIT: This was originally the top-level comment in this thread, but in deciding to turn this into a continuing series, I replaced the top comment with a general overview. Take a look, if you haven’t seen it! By request, this is my attempt at a guide to recognizing and avoiding hypothermia in the w...

Re: Sierra Strider Hard Kit Breakdown
I noticed you only (presently) have food bags weighed, and I'm quite sure they're empty at that weight. A suggestion: I carry a copper 'Gil' cup as both a small drinking cup that I can brew tea in, etc. as well as for a measuring/rationing cup. I use it to measure flour for dumplings, milled oats (...

So. COOL. Is Echo some species of the Buteo genus? A broad-winged hawk, maybe, or a juvenile redtail?Greg wrote:I'll pitch a few in here!

Re: Sierra Strider Hard Kit Breakdown
I'm not sure I would trust a bridge made of them, to many joints to fail, but I suppose if it were the only option in an emergency, cool idea though Wild to me as well, but impressive. The eye splices are stronger than just about any knot--if the toggles weren't a weak point, a series of toggle rop...

Re: Sierra Strider Soft Kit Breakdown
Awesome. Really like your moccasins. They are SO COMFY. Easily the comfiest shoes I own. Not sure about durability of the leather soles, but hopefully I'll be able to re-sole them myself if it ever comes to that. The metal grommets for the laces also aren't period by any means, but they're too nice...
