Dakota Firehole Experiment Results

I've always heard about "Dakota Fireholes" in the context of bushcraft, but never really tried one. Being determined to spend the night out in period kit soon, I decided that any experiments that could improve the effectiveness of a fire would be good to try. For those who might not be fam...

Wow, that looks great, Iodo! The trim and embroidery are awesome. It fits super well with the rest of the kit.

Re: Winter in Wilderland

The bellows-tube is actually a goose's wingbone (the ulna, I believe)! That's brilliant. I have a little piece of copper tubing I use for the purpose but despite the material used, it's rather obviously modern. I know that elder twigs can be hollowed out, but a bird bone would be significantly less...

Re: Winter in Wilderland

Those temps blow my California mind! I mean, I've spent one or two colder nights in modern kit, but I've also spent warmer nights at 9,000 feet in January! I can't imagine doing that with period gear. I'm wanting to try a trek near freezing soon and unsure even how I'll pull that off. I've seen you ...

Re: Weekend in Rivendell

Would be awesome to find more Rangers around here. I'm only about 3 hours from Yosemite definitely down to make the drive if there's another. Whoa I need to check in here more often! I didn’t even know Kortoso had sent a general invitation to all you wonderful MERF folk. So...I know Kortoso is li...

Sweet Eru on a pogo stick, I'm feeling good about making bags that are roughly bag-shaped and then I see stuff like this! That tooling is gorgeous!

Hold still! Ima stab you with this healing blade! It'll make you feel better! thanks for the offer but, I think I'll take my chances... :P LOL If only this were such a ridiculous notion! With the astonishing popularity of bloodletting in Europe, and the equivalent Chinese practice that has since be...

Re: 2020 - Skill/Goal Recap and Looking Ahead

Last time I did one of these was 2017! Well, this year I can actually afford materials , so I'm a lot more optimistic about meeting goals. As for what I accomplished from the last set of goals, I've gotten much better at starting a fire with flint and steel. I'm still more reliant on char cloth and ...

We Men of the West (Coast) might have to set up a moot! I'm jealous of the midwesterners having all the fun.

Re: Treasures in the mountains! Coin-caches.

BRILLIANT. You, sir, are an adventurer's best friend! So... just wondering if anybody has gone up there to look for this? There is another one in the Ruby Range in NE Nevada. I plan to go out that way again this summer, and if they are not found by then, I plan to retrieve them myself and re-cache ...

Wow. As an uncultured Yank, that is about the most English-looking establishment I can imagine. Ostrander hut, in Yosemite National Park. https://www.sierrastar.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/tony-krizan/ae3g92/picture231145988/alternates/FREE_1140/main%20ostrander%20lake%20hut Actually...it's a ways ...

I would be honored to contribute a piece of my art, such as it is, though what I could map that would be relevant, I have no idea.

A simple need wallet

Here's a piece of essential kit I've had my eye on for quite some time--a need wallet. It's exactly what I had in mind when I requested small buckles for my Yule gift exchange, and with Odigan coming through so beautifully I figured I had run out of excuses to procrastinate. I took the advice of sev...
