Re: The Leaving of Liverpool in a tunnel on a 150 mile bike ride in the Japanese hinterland.

How is Japan in spring? It sounds like an extraordinary experience. It is! I went on an overnighter in the mountains that are within walking distance of my apartment a few weeks ago, and WOW. Camping in a cherry blossom grove 400 meters up a mountain and 800 meters from the sea is quite something. ...

Hey all. I'm living abroad at the moment and haven't been able to take my ranger kit with me, but I thought you all might appreciate some traditional music from a recent patrol around the Izu peninsula.

Re: What size of rope makes sense? A discussion.

I now carry a small bag with several smaller lengths of different diameter, I find I use them more readily because they are accessible and they take up much less space in my pack. Hmmm. I've been doing something similar without really thinking about it. Maybe I should start doing it more consciously.

What size of rope makes sense? A discussion.

So I recently posted somewhat jokingly about the discrepancy between Dungeons and Dragons hempen rope weight (10lbs for 50 feet) and the weight of my trusty hemp rope (1lb for 57 feet). Based on crossectional area of my rope, pi, and the square-cube law, rope that would weigh as much as Dungeons and...

.... I'm still torn whether to hear a nice dark fiddle rendition of Tam Lin or an instrumental of Omnia's The Well for background music to that! I've been learning Tam Lin on my fiddle and whistles. The way it's usually played feels a bit too energetic and upbeat to back up an eerie story around th...

Re: "Tolkien was an Anarchist"

While I decidedly *don't* want to get into modern politics, as such a thing has already destroyed one good board I miss... GOD NO. I don't care if he voted Tory or Labour and wouldn't have brought up so mundane a fact, but...anarcho-monarchism is just such an endearingly offbeat ideal of human gove...

"Tolkien was an Anarchist"

I just saw a fascinating discussion on the r/TolkienFans subreddit, where someone by the handle u/MadHopper posted the following: Many people know of Tolkien’s various influences, but it’s not often discussed how his anarcho-monarchist political leanings touched on his work. From a letter to Chr...

Elleth's Pendants for Yule

This is a bit different, since these accessories are made with modern processes and not particularly period-appropriate, but they achieved a look that I've been dreaming of for some time and finally executed to a surprising degree of efficacy. I had to brainstorm a bit on Elleth's requests for this ...

Re: Dakota Firehole Experiment Results

How about throwing some rocks into your under bed fire pit. Once the stones are heated they should give up heat a little longer so you won't have to feed the pit or stir up the coals as often, giving you a better. Rocks are actually comparatively terrible at storing heat. The specific heat of water...

Re: Dakota Firehole Experiment Results

So I've posted the results of this a bit around the internet. There were a LOT of suggestions to "Just use a hot water bottle". Apart from the fact that hot water isn't workable in a flacket, this suggestion seemed to be missing the point, so I decided to do S C I E N C E . I've used hot w...

Re: An overnighter in full kit

What song was that? "Herr Mannelig", an old Swedish folk tune. "Early one morning, before the sun rose up, Before the birds started singing, The mountain troll approached the handsome squire She had a false tongue. 'Sir Manly, Sir Manly, Betrothe yourself to me For all I so gladly of...
