Re: Inns of Middle Earth

Never been there but The George in Norton St Phillip, Somerset looks worth a mention. I believe it was the inspiration for Magnum's album cover On a Storytellers Night by Rodney Matthews.

Re: Inns of Middle Earth

I visited Wales's oldest inn this weekend and thought it may be of interest. 900 years old and still going.

Re: Point of Curiosity, re: Snapsacks/Knapsacks

Hi Elleth,

I was born and bred about 20 miles north of Birmingham, on the edge of the Black Country. My family roots come from the Shropshire / Wales border.

Re: Point of Curiosity, re: Snapsacks/Knapsacks

Growing up in the Midlands in the UK I agree with ForgeCorvus that "snap" has always been a term for food or snacks. My grandad would often tell me to "get some snap down you". To me a snapsack would be a general bag to keep food in and not a specific style of bag. This could be ...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

It's in the southern Lake District in the UK. This walk was from Gummer's How to Cartmel.

Oh, and a pipe is definitely on my shopping list!

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

The boots are from SokolWorkshop on Etsy. The same design isn't shown anymore but they are almost identical to the "Aragorn Knee high boots". Overall I'm really happy with them. If there is an issue it is that I ordered them slightly too big (my bad). However I've solved this with a thick ...

Some photos of a recent trip. Already shared on FB but thought it would be good to share them on the forum too.

Re: In Search of the Many-Rayed Star

Found this 1960's brooch on etsy today. Not sure how strong the pin will be, what it's made from and whether it will hold a cloak in place but thought it was worth a look. Not too expensive. Will hopefully arrive in about two weeks. Just shows it is worth keeping a look out for vintage items that ma...

Inns of Middle Earth

Pubs, inns, taverns, appear a number of times in the tales Middle Earth. Do any Rangers have favourite drinking holes that could belong there? This could be because of the location, interior decor or the appearance of the building. To start things off here is one of my favourites, Dungeon Ghyll Hote...

Re: Ventile

I've used ventile to make a smock and it is pretty waterproof, especially if used in a double layer. It has the obvious advantage that it is a lot lighter and more breathable than oilcloth and canvas. I think my main stumbling point is that if I try to be true to the spirit of MERF, cotton, by Tolki...

Ventile

I'm considering using ventile as an alternative to canvas or oilcloth to make a lightweight tarp and possibly cloak. Just wondering as to people's views on the authenticity of using this material. Pros - 100% natural, no modern chemicals or artificial fabrics / membranes Cons - would it have been po...
