Re: Duties of a ranger

The trick is to get past the idea that a Ranger is a "character class", which comes with a set of skills or stats. 'Ranger' in the Tolkien legendarium is, rather, the term given the wandering descendants of Numenor in Eriador circa 3rd Age Middle-earth by the Bree-folk, not knowing what e...

Re: Duties of a ranger

From memory - Within Middle Earth of the late Third Age specifically, I think it's fairly clear their primary role is something between border patrol and occasional expeditionary force. It's implied their primary foes are creatures of Sauron, but given how brigandage seemed to pick up on the East R...

Duties of a ranger

While the skills of a ranger might be obvious, I'm curious as to what a ranger does. What are his or her duties? This could change with fantasy worlds I assume but, generally what do you guys and gals think a rangers function in society is or what they're goals are? What duties do they have?

Cheers!

" The Company took little gear of war, for their hope was in secrecy not in battle . Aragorn had Anduril but no other weapon, and he went forth clad only in rusty green and brown, as a Ranger of the wilderness ." LR Bk II Ch 3. "All had swords at their sides, and were clad in green a...

Re: Weapons of choice

So does everyone here think wearing mail is to much for patrols/ambushes and other normal ranger activities? I don't have riveted mail but I thought it'd be ok as its light-ish and flexible. But since you guys have actual experience with it and doing ranger things would you say its to much and stick...

Re: Weapons of choice

I just love the versatility of the sword and buckler. At the moment I am using the hanwei tinker arming sword as my main weapon. I find a gambeson provides good enough protection and isn't too bulky or noisy. I consider going to messer only but when I spar everyone uses atleast a large shield and ha...

Re: Weapons of choice

Haha yeah I do want to get riveted mail myself one day. I have butted atm that will serve for costume purposes but tbh I'm not sure I want to wear mail in a ranger situation. When you say short sword are you doing more of cutlass/saber?

Weapons of choice

Hey all! New ranger here and I'm very interested in everyone's weapons and armor of choice. At the moment I'd have to say mine is arming sword and buckler (tho I don't have a real buckler, just cold steel synthetic) with my gambeson. No armor to speak of yet besides butted mail costume armor. Anyway...
