Re: Suduing wood and metal.. thoughts?

When it comes to darkening metals, there are a few modern quick solutions such as Gun Blue which work really well. I've used it with good result on guards, pommels, and blades. Here's one I did a while back : https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4587/39486215471_7284ddc19d_k.jpg Untitled by Steven Huerta ...

Re: Dynasty Forge Bastard!

Oooh, I do love me some Matt Easton! The XVIa is my favorite sword type, I'll definitely check this out.

Semi related note, i've been checking out your YouTube channel, really great stuff!

Re: Viking-era scabbard attachments

I think the art of it is something to take into consideration. Many of our ancient brethren had a great talent for melding form and function and I think this article is a beautiful example of that. I don't see it as complicated, but more as a culture that took enough pride in their tools to also mak...

Thank tyou very much, gentlemen!

Thanks! Yes, the strap from the main belt that runs under the by-knife keeps a snug pressure fit and the small braided one adds a little extra security.

Re: A New Scabbard in the Works

Thank you, gentlemen!

And thank you Pete, black and oxblood is my favorite combo on leather. It's not the most traditional for a Ranger, but the oxblood gets dark enough to look very earthy so I think it works if not overdone.

Re: A New Scabbard in the Works

That makes a lot of sense! I could imagine also solid placeholder core as a "last" of sorts - but that's a lot of work if one's only doing one of a particular scabbard it seems. Regardless, it looks lovely, and I can't wait to see your next one. :) Thanks again! I'm already planning the n...

Re: A New Scabbard in the Works

Wow! That's fantastic. :) ... will you be adding background texture/stippling around the vines, or leaving as is? And do you do your leather carving on the scabbard itself, or carve it first and then glue it to the core? Thank you! For this one I won’t be doing any backgrounding. It’s just pref...

Re: A New Scabbard in the Works

I think that's a factor of the material, then, for sure. Vegtan really does stretch quite a bit...I wrapped mine in lambskin and that level of stretch just wasn't happening, which is why I folded it under on the backside. Looks very clean. What're you tooling with? Thanks! Nothing too fancy for thi...

Re: A New Scabbard in the Works

What's your process for fitting the byknife scabbard? I'm not sure I'm seeing a seam, so how'd you handle the big elevation change across the throat? Can we maybe see from the other direction? Looking good. Thanks! I glue the by-knife scabbard directly to the sword's core, then I stretch the leathe...

A New Scabbard in the Works

I had a bit of an "incident" with my previous scabbard for this sword so I set out this past week to make a new one. While I was at it, I thought I'd push myself a little and actually tool the designs into the leather rather than using risers under the leather. The vine designs may be a li...

Re: Beware the Mops and Sociopaths.

From a "new guy" perspective, I think it's a delicate balance. While I do enjoy cosplay, the main attraction to the MERF for me was being able to take that costuming idea to the next level from a functional perspective. The though of a trek through the wild in full kit was appealing to me ...

Re: Not Perfect, But Getting There...

Looks great. If I may ask what pattern did you use for the jerkin or was it more of a figure it out as you go thing? Thank you! It's a little of both, actually. The main part I cut using an old vest of mine as a primary pattern and added a little bit of length to it. The rest of the bits were a bit...
