Re: Bits and Peices

Loving those ordinary items which give the kit a finished sense. The bag of nails is a brilliant idea.

Re: Greetings!

Welcome to the forums Ionwë

Things seem to have been a bit slow here the past few months but don't let that dissuade you from starting or joining any conversations! It's heading into nicer weather in my part of the world so hopefully theres some outings soon.

Re: Lanolin question

Not sure on your side of the pond but there is a company here called woolube (classy I know) who do all kinds of lanolin from spray bottles through to thick grease. Depending on how heavy duty you want to go they would have a product it's just a matter of availability. https://woolube.com.au/product...

Re: Thoughts on Civil War "Dog Tents?"

Dog tents are only really useful in the event that you have enough warmth from either the ambient temperature or your bedding to have two whopping great holes at either end. We have a five metre longtent set up in the highlands and despite all care being taken in selection of campsite and facing it ...

Re: CLOSED Viking Shoes from GDFB size 38 never worn

My experience is that the only way to make truly waterproof period shoes is by the use of sealskin or other naturally waterproof hide. It doesn't matter the amount of waterproofing you do, after several hours in the snow or mire leather shoes soak through. It's actually a bit liberating though as yo...

Re: Greetings from Central Florida

Greetings Wyrdmake and welcome to the forums, it always makes me happy seeing newcomers express that feeling of finally finding something they didn't quite know they were looking for. I like that you're planning towards a goal of a longer trip next year as having a goalpost makes everything accounta...

Re: Hi everybody!

Now, the most difficult for me will be to wear medieval clothes and cross some "normal" people on my road, I'm scared by that because I'm "shy" Does everybody assume their style or some people are in my case? :?: I've been out on the trail in both historical and fantas...

Re: Elladan and Elrohir: Rangers?

For various reasons I'm not keen on portrayals of named characters True, but it has been done (Manveruon and his incredible screen accurate Strider impression) I didn't say that it cant be done or can't be done well just that I myself am not a huge fan. Perhaps if everyone went to Manvs lengths of ...

Re: Discovery of Glacier Bay by John Muir

I live to far north for cedar, but I have some Tlingit friends, I'll check with them. Most basketry/weaving in this area was made from plaited spruce roots. The sausage described is also nothing that I've heard of in local cultures. Though I'm rather interested, I'll investigate that as well. If it...

Re: Discovery of Glacier Bay by John Muir

Interesting! I'm gonna bet the cedar matting he describes is woven bark, something like these: As his departure point is Wrangell and it's the local tribes he recruits I think you may be right on the mark there. Very interesting considering the fellow in question took just the mat and a blanket it ...

Discovery of Glacier Bay by John Muir

I'm currently reading the 'Discovery of Glacier Bay' an essay by John Muir and came across this line which I found interesting regarding the bedding and food of the local people. His wife got ready his blanket and a piece of cedar matting for his bed, and some provisions - mostly dried salmon, and s...

I had an alarm set for it to message you directly but I failed.

I am a terrible friend. What is worse is I think we talked cloaks that day?

Anyways, I hope it was a good day spent in the way that you wished.

Re: Dressing in Esgaroth and Dale?

Darnokthemage's versions for me are pretty close to perfect. He's combined the text and the Professors own drawings to create colourful and vibrant depictions with strong historical emphasis. I especially like his armoured ones where they aren't wearing uniform clothes or gear. Take those, smatter t...
