Re: What does everyone focus on?

Lance or hewing spear? Don't forget that a spear is not just the pointy end, you've got a staff and a club as well Technically a viking throwing spear, or at least that's what windlass called that particular spear head. I'm definitely going to be looking at staff drills, as well as spear drills. ht...

Re: What's in your (Need) Wallet?

Lots of dried cranberries and apples. My problem was the texture, and a big part of that is my meat to tallow ratio was off

Re: What's everyone working on?

Finished a fair amount of projects recently - a bedroll, a shield, and upgrades for my boots so far. Now I just have to fix all of the issues with those I discovered on my first outing with them, as well as put my snapsacks back together lol. My next project is likely to be a pack frame. https://i.i...

Re: A Ranger's Bedroll

I experimented with carrying mine across the back, but I've since moved to an external frame pack, as I couldn't fit as much food as I wanted in just a snapsack. Before that, I had mine rolled up across the back parallel to my quiver, which worked fairly well. The only issue I had was that the strap...

Re: What's in your (Need) Wallet?

I carry a first aid kit and a wilderness survival kit with some modern supplies (mirror, whistle, fish hooks, a fire starter and saw). I will admit that my needs wallet is not really meant as a standalone full survival kit, but rather a modern gear supplement to the other gear on my belt/person. As ...

Re: Light Source.

I carry a folding lantern, as well as a number of small short candles. The folding lantern doesn't put out a ton of light, but it is better than nothing, especially in windy areas. The short candles are great for an easy to get to light source, or for starting fires in wet areas - I need to get more...

Re: The making of a Dunedain Snapsack

Excellent guide - If I hadn't already made a snapsack, I would probably do one of these. I do have one question - why leather for waterproofing instead of waterproofing the linen itself? It seems like the leather would be heavier than oilclothing or waxing the linen.

Re: What does everyone focus on?

I've been experimenting with a number of weapons, and am currently planning to focus on spear or spear and sword/dagger. Our local ranger group does some free sparring, and so far the spear is by far the best way to kill an opponent without suffering injury. I am almost completely self taught, and a...

Re: Dry goods and other musings

Speaking of the five day challenge, I'm working on putting together a 7 day meal plan. I need to do some cooking and make sure it all fits in my gear, but I'm planning on living on it in a week or two. I expect that I will be thoroughly sick of the meals a few days in lol.

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Had a ranger gathering recently, here's the pics of me from the event (I have the grey hood and cloak). The rest of the pics from the gathering are on facebook, if theres interest I might be able to link the post? I'm pretty close to having a full working kit, just need to get food nailed down. http...

Re: What's everyone working on?

Those are fabric wraps, the shirt is a bit poofy on the arms, so I added wraps to keep everything tight. I plan to do vambraces over them at some point though.

Finished up a few belt items, plus upgraded my waterskin and prototyped a quiver. Kit is definitely coming together!
