Re: A question about packs.

A few simple well thought out choices in tools, enables you to do allot in the woods. A hand axe or tomahawk, paired with a large hunting knife can go along way to making a good shelter. Likewise things like dry beans, flour or cornmeal, a little dried meat can be suplamented with fresh game ( if yo...

Re: Calling All Pittsburgh/Appalachia/ Ohio Valley Dunedain!

This is somthing i have been thinking on for a while, there are quite a few of us in these parts, quite a few rangers here in the Appalachians. Im with Greg, i dont think most of us do too well at renfairs. were woods folk. maybe we all can work somthing out?

Re: A question about packs.

So hi to everyone, it' been a while. After allot of thought I have decided to go with my snapsacks. As i become more comfortable with building shelter from whats available I no longer need a large pack( yep the canvas fly i made is out for all but extended trips.). Im curently doing a rethink of all...

Re: Sword Recommendations

I would personally recomend a type 10 -12 range. i myself use the Tinker Norman sword i customized. its barely over two pounds in weight, and is very agile in the hand. I beleive it's closer to a type 10a. like Greg I am biased to that type blade i use. it's like having an old freind with you. as i ...

Re: A question about packs.

I agree, the swiss packs are nice.and with a little modification i think would look just fine for a ranger on an extended journey. it seems that Tolkien liked packs too, atleast thats what i gather from his writings. A pack in my opinion is a must especially for winter. Spare blanket, and spare winte...

A question about packs.

I was reading a past thread started by Ken reguarding descriptions of gear in both lord of the rings and the hobbit. It got me to thinking about packs, what type would have been used. in several passages we read about the hobbits shouldering their packs and how stuffed they were with gear. now that ...

I forged it. then polished it up a bit with some 220 grit emery paper, then heated it up again untill the metal turned a straw color.

Re: Primative grease lamp.

Thanks pete, it was hard work, to get it to even remotly resemble a leaf. if your into hard core wildernes survival skills i suppose you could use tallow as a replacement for oil. but i use mineral oil on my blades so thats waht ill have on hand most of the time.

Primative grease lamp.

Greatings fellow rangers! I though i would share a small project i did over the/my weekend. It's a primative grease lamp i have made from (gasp) stainless. while the steel isn't authentic to our time periods, i fetl like it would hold up better to the out doors. I suppose one could be made from bras...
