Re: Let's clothe a ranger.

I am not an 18th c. reenactor, but as a lifestyle steampunk, I love my plus fours. But that's immaterial. I did the colonial knee breeches because I do feel that the north (or at least the shire & Bree) are very much 18th century, and wish to make a nod to that. When rangering, I am a hosen, wi...

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire books.

I like the series. Very readable and done without worrying about being PC. The video seems very true to the books, as well. Waiting for the next season on DVD. I've actually been putting together a Nights Watch kit. Very similar to my other kit, only all black and no bow. The kit seems to be a mix o...

Re: Archer's glove

I like the idea. I think for myself I'd use a short fingerless glove, something like a weightlifter's glove and attach the bracer to the inner wrist. while I want the protection on the inside of the arm, I don't think I'd want two layers of leather wrapped around the whole forearm.

Re: Went to the Faire today

Yes, I went Saturday, the massive rain band went out to sea and we had great weather. I wore the Border Reiver kit and everyone thought I was Spanish because I was wearing the morion. I didn't take any pics. I rarely do anymore. I find the camera to be an intrusion that makes me step out of the mind...

Re: Ranger cloaks

None of the options are particularly comfortable, though they do serve to ease some of Mother Nature's nastier aspects. I learned long ago, though (back when I was a member of the Coalition of Historical Trekkers), that going into the woods with period kit requires giving up the concept of comfort. ...

Re: Ranger cloaks

Well, if a Laurel who got it for period correct lifestyle may comment....... I have 4 cloaks. One is just a court cloak and doesn't count. I use an old British police cloak as a general purpose cloak. Thigh length, no hood, heavy fulled wool. My deep winter cloak is ankle length, hooded, heavy wool ...

Re: Went to the Faire today

I think I saw you there, we were there all three days of Labour Day weekend. We are heading back tomorrow for final weekend, even though the weather does not look promising. Still not sure if I want to wear ranger kit or my Border Reiver kit. I did pick up a matching set of Starfire sword and dagger...

Re: Concerning Pipe-Weed

A couple of years ago, I spent an afternoon rolling organic, heritage seed tobacco at a historic site. By the time the afternoon was done, the 4 of us doing it had quite the buzz on, just from contact absorbtion. Commercial tobacco is highly proceesed and the plant is a hybrid to take out much of th...

Re: Need-wallet

Hello, I'm back. Summer is a crazy time for me.

Looking at the pics of the model posted by Greg, perhaps something like this would work, if shoulder straps were added.

Re: So, what are we doing?

The cold has been a real problem. We've been getting a major storm a week for the last month. Between cleaning up from them and recovering from the clean up, and dealing with the cold itself, there's not much energy left for getting stuff done. Really gives you an appreciation of why armies went int...

Re: So, what are we doing?

Freezing, mostly  The southern New England area should not be getting this much snow. Finally dug through the waist high snowbank to get into the shop this morning, so I can start/finish a bunch of projects. I did find out, though, that Fiebings Oil Dye does still work at 8 degrees F. Went up t...

Re: Happened again!

Good luck, Eric. I've played that game and it's not fun. When the old man who started our agency died, another partner was brought in with all the NYC ideas of how a business should be run. We lost accounts and went from 120 people down to 25 in 3 years. I'd tell you my opinion of MBAs but this is a...

Re: New Maille project

If I'm armouring up for the full 15th c harness, its a linen shirt followed by a leather jerkin, followed by the mail with the padded jack on top of everything. The leather jerkins sometimes have a bit of padding in the shoulders, but I've never known it to make much difference. If the leather is go...

Re: Rangers Kit

As a side note on the kit, I was thinking of getting a knife striker combination like they had in colonial times. Does anyone know where I could get one, maybe even a fellow ranger could smith me one? I've tried using one and, like many combined tools, is not as good as two individual tools. The gr...
