Re: Sept 2011 -- New England Ranger Hike

Terribly sorry, kept forgetting to check this forum. On me, eh? Ack, you don't know what you're in for, you're choosing the most indecisive chooser this side of the Misties. All right then, I say Oct 1st--a little cooler, perhaps, but we'll dodge the summer crowd, and perhaps get to see some ...

Re: Announcing the Storytelling Contest Winner for Winter 2010!

Great job, everybody! I think next time 'round, I might go the Ernildihir route and give an improvised ballad a try...could be fun! I'd love to see more of those. *sings* "And there was a wind from the West that blew through the… forest, cascading through the leaves. And there were...

Announcing the Storytelling Contest Winner for Winter 2010!

*signals to Ghan-buri-ghan* *drum roll begins* And the first-place winner, as chosen by popular vote, with 21% of the votes, is... *elven horn blows* Kaelin, with the entry "Idiot's Errand" ! Mirimaran and Greg tied for second, with five votes each, and in a what-I-like-to-see moment, ever...

Re: Swedish torch

I'd never heard of it, so I did some googling, and found this:

http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28143

Seems like a very efficient way to make a small cooking fire. I'm not sure quite how portable it would be while lit, though...

Re: Sept 2011 -- New England Ranger Hike

How does the weekend of Sept 10th sound? I *think* that would be the best one for me.

Too early in the season? We could try for the weekend of Oct 1st if that would be better.

Re: Sept 2011 -- New England Ranger Hike

No, I didn't have any site in particular in mind. All the good camping places I know of are in New York, closer to me, and may be out of other Rangers' way. (We've done treks at the Neversink and at Alder Lake in the Catskills, and a canoe trek at Lake Lila in the Adirondacks.) If possible, though, ...

Sept 30th through Oct 2nd? -- New England Ranger Hike

I figured I'd start a thread for the tentative hike and get-together we were talking about doing in this thread: http://ranger.budgetauthenticity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=800&start=30 You can never start planning too early for such things. ;-) From what I remember, we were talking somew...

Only a few days left!

So far I see Pete's, Ernildhir's, Eric's, Greg's, Ranger of Ardethain's and Mirimaran's entries. If I'm missing anyone's, let me know!

On the 1st, I'll put up a poll so all of you can vote!

Re: So, what are we doing?

Lately, I've been hard at work making more cold-weather Ranger gear. The Fellowship traveled through the winter, after all. I recently crafted a new rectangular cloak, a sort of Ranger poncho, which can double as ground-cloth or blanket. I also made a new deerskin jerkin in brown, to replace my blac...

Re: Rangers Kit

I like to look at Civil War, Revolutionary War, and French and Indian War kits for inspiration and guidelines. Of course, our kits will be different--no musket gear, for one thing--but it helps to give me a sense of scale. http://www.26nc.org/Articles/knapsack%20and%20blanket%20roll.pdf ^This is a g...

Re: Storytelling Contest!

Um, am I allowed to do a story about a ranger in the desert? If Aragorn could go wandering into the far south "where the stars are strange," then surely other Rangers can head to the desert. Absolutely--I look forward to seeing how a Ranger character would adapt to such a drastic change i...
