Re: For the Pipe Smokers: Favorite Tobacco?

My blend of choice is Boswell's "Berry Cobbler." http://www.boswellpipes.com/tobaccoblends.html I partake about four to eight pipe-fulls a year, particularly in nice weather when hiking. Keeps bugs away from your face, too. Regarding blending 'baccy in the same pipe: it depends on the kind...

If you want to do it with Strider's sword rather than Anduril, I could take a photo of my Borderwatch for you to 'shop.

Re: True WMA in film

Kingdom of Heaven at least *mentioned* some WMA, and showed it in the training sequence. They then proceeded to go back to spinny movie swordfighting for the rest of the film.

Re: Scenario - February 2014

Here's mine. First of all, as a tactician, I really dislike this village. As one of the guys in the 13th Warrior said, "You couldn't keep a cow out of this place." No fence, no wall, no river... My first inclination is pure flight, and if we had a few horses, or if we didn't have so many c...

Re: Scenario - January 2014

Okay, here we go. First problem is those hounds. So, I cut into the rocky foothills and find myself a nice steep cliff, climbable but too steep for dogs. Up I go, straight up and over. The orcs will be forced to either leave the dogs behind (unlikely) or find another way around. This should buy me a...

Well, you're north of the Gulf of Lune, somewhere near the Blue Mountains... I'm guessing around where Thorin's dwarven colony would be?

Re: Affordable spear head.

I've always gone with around 5 feet for a dedicated thrower, 8+ for a dedicated stabber, and between 6 and 7 for an allaround. But that's based on personal preference more than any historical record.

Re: Affordable spear head.

I also have the other JAS Townsend spearhead and it is nice and solid. No complaints. I've thrown it, sharpened it, stabbed soft targets with it, and once scared off coyotes with it and some recorder music. If that is like this one, it's not a bad purchase. http://s17.postimg.org/lh95mpy1b/A_Blacksh...

Re: COOKING

That pan Chris linked is pretty cool, but frying pans to be used as frying pans, if you'll pardon my being repetitive, shouldn't be made of tin-lined copper. The tin-to-copper attachment process can't handle the high heats necessary for browning meat, etc., and will bubble and separate from the cop...

Re: COOKING

It depends on what you're cooking and how. The Boy Scouts have a saying: "Flames for boiling, coals for broiling." Mostly of my packed-in trekking food tends to be dried stuff that gets boiled into a stew: dried corn, jerky, and beans. Flames and a pot serve quite well in this regard: I su...

Ringulf, where in Lindenhurst? I lived on 8th street by the water, and then on 5th a few blocks north of Montauk, up until two years ago!

Re: To Prof. Tolkien, wherever he may be...

I've attained a sort of legendary status among my friends... See, whenever we're watching LOTR or the Hobbit, and something doesn't make sense, they turn to me and say, "Why did X do Y?" (Why is Arwen dying? Why is Frodo showing the Ringwraiths the Ring? Why doesn't Gandalf just cast Feath...

Desolation of Smaug: Review

Spoiler alert, in case it isn't obvious. ... ... ... Okay, you've been warned. First off, I have to say, I love the opening scene. It really is straight out of the Appendix (or was it the Unfinished Tales?), the meeting between Gandalf and Thorin. And, of course, it means we get to see Bree again......
