Re: Starting to Assemble a Dwarven Toolkit

Now I have to learn to splice rope, you guys are killing me ! :P It's ok my friend it is not something difficult to learn at all though there are as many ways to spice as there are to tie knots and as with knots, each is designed for a different purpose. Get thee to a West Marine (You can get fids,...

Re: Thoughts on cleaning up a maille avontail or camail

For this particular application, I went with a method that seemed to be the simple solution. Simple but not necessarily easy. Before separating the maille from the helm, I used several different grits of sanding sponges. This was recommended by a European knight who was adamant that you did not use ...

Re: A bit of Shire goodness

If one wanted to stick with old-world birds, one could use goose: it's not exactly unlike turkey, but it's darker yet: sort of a weird combination of turkey, beef, and organ meat. I love it, but I grant it's an acquired taste. I wonder what to pair it with on the sweet side? Something tart and berr...

Re: Starting to Assemble a Dwarven Toolkit

Great project Iodo! I really like what you have gathered. When I committed to Ringulf's backstory as an itinerant craftsman wandering in the Shire, planted by the Rangers to watch from within, I had to ask and answer many of these questions. I too had built a "tool kit" and had gone as far...

Re: Thoughts on cleaning up a maille avontail or camail

Thanks folks! Fortunately the avontail is easily separated from the Helmet so I am going to try several methods to clean this one up and replace this one with one that is not rusted off another helm, (making a few adjustments to duplicate the pattern). I will keep working on the original and see wha...

Thoughts on cleaning up a maille avontail or camail

I most likely butchered the spellings on the Subject line, but I have a nice Germondbu Helm, that has a maille avontail and it may have gotten put up on it's stand after a big, sweaty, Dwarven head was living in it for a while. I have heard of the old "sand in a bag" trick, though my sand ...

Re: An update from Ringulf

You are right! That is one thing that should go on the list! I do have a desalinator (reverse osmosis type from my Sailboat) so I suppose if our "saved water" can't get us through I could use that but it is very labor-intensive. Kinda like charging your cell phone with a crank generator! I...

Re: Art thread? Might take some fun small requests if people want.

I'd love to see some of your drawings Ringulf, have you ever posted any anywhere? A few from time to time, a while back I posted one of my Ringulf Avatars for a Middle Earth Fourth Age Pathfinder game, I will have to go find that one and put it up. I was also thinking of doing some portraits that I...

Re: Art thread? Might take some fun small requests if people want.

You have a fun and interesting style that would lend itself well to book illustration among other genres. Keep it up! I, like you, enjoy drawing Dwarves and Hobbits most of all. I have even done quite a few sculptures of them...something I need to get back to doing as soon as I can! Keep it up you a...

Re: Waterproofing Leather?

All great replies, fantastic information running the gammit of methods and preferences. I fall into line with Elleth, Taurinor and the rest who prefer the combination of Bee's wax and Neatsfoot oil, and have used Mink oil for waterproofing with good results in the short term. you can keep it viable ...

Re: An update from Ringulf

Thanks all! We kind of live in a state of quasi preparedness. Everything down here is tryin' to kill ya! If it is not the flora it's the fauna! I mean I don't have to run from Grizzlys, but I have been chased by a few hogs in the preserve next to me. The weather can be quite an interesting thing dow...

Re: Dwarves and Elves in Norse Myth

Wow, I took a while to get around to this post! I found the "Catalogue" a while back when I was doing the research to support the Norse view of Dwarves and their relationship to Norse society for some persona work in the SCA. His (Prof. Tolkien's) dwarves were based on much of the Norse an...

An update from Ringulf

Hello all! I wanted to give a little update on things and let you know what your Naugothrain has been up to. Well, ...What can I tell you? Life in the wide world goes on much as it has this past age, full of its own comings and goings...oh wait, wrong story! Well almost. Several things have been occ...

Wolfgar! So nice to have you back! I have wondered about you and hoped you were well! I too had taken a "Holiday" from many of my activities able to only focus on one at a time for a bit but I have become very interested in bushcraft and Bushcraft skills so I have been around much more oft...
