Re: Knives.

Nice set of blades. I love Opinels; real workhorse knives.

I recently picked up a puuko. bought it from a friend who wore it at Viking reenactments. Nice knife, but I hesitate to use it because it's so pretty.

Re: Heat Revealing "Ink"

I used to do this as a kid (don't ask how long ago). According to some book I had back then, you could also use onion juice, and I think milk as well. I figured milk would stink after very long, onion juice was too much work, but Mom always had a bottle of lemon juice in the fridge.

The drone running parallel to the chanter is interesting; it reminds me of some French and Flemish pipes I've seen.

no.
Hint:
it IS homemade but not in the US nor by an American.
Is that a Montagnard/Hmong crossbow?

You mention medieval antibiotics. There are records of only one being used: honey has antibiotic properties, and was historically put on minor wounds. That said, I haven't tried it myself.

Re: Scenario - January 2014

The thing to do is hightail. This is too much foe for me, and I have to wonder, if there's one hunting party after me, might there be others? Step one is take out the hounds. I'm inclined, weather permitting, to head for Redhorn Pass. Holding higher ground, in the mountains, there should be plenty o...

That looks identical to a set my father-in-law just gave me for my birthday. Cool-looking, but long and heavy. I think they'd be unwieldy to actually eat with.

Rik, what are the knots you used for that first sling? I can't see it well.

I'm another sling fan, just not able to practice, living in the suburbs.

Greg, I just you a PM with my email, and also a link to the Facebook page for my Ren Faire act, just for grins. I don't think this is going to be a short conversation; I can talk music for hours.

Straelbora, if you do get such a place built in Brown Co, will you be needing any entertainment there? Say, a fiddler, perhaps? I'm on Indy's south side; Brown county is a reckless drive down 135 for me.

Re: Viewer's Comments - Spoilers Welcome, be Warned

I finally got around to seeing it. I liked it, but I disliked the way Jackson changed the storyline (Radagast, Azog, Thorin hates elves, the undwarvish dwarves), and of course, the abrupt stop at the end. One change that I did like was the dwarves being armed. It bothered me, even as a kid, that Tol...

Re: Anyone else do Halloween Tolkien-Style?

Not exactly, but one year this happened: I used to put on my Ren Faire garb and escort my kids around the neighborhood. At one house, a group of teenagers were handing out the candy. "Dude, are you hobbit?" (NO, I didn't bring an instrument, but I'm a Renaissance minstrel.) "A renna-w...
