Thanks for thinking of me, Greg. Truth is, that would be way beyond my limited German.TaylorSteiner wrote:Oh yeah I forgot about Straelbora...shucks as I've already sent it back to amazon.

Re: Pennsic 2019
One of these days we'll have to give that a try. Sadly not this year though. I don't suppose you've a good lead on a maker of period-style camp furniture though? Preferably in the Northeast US to save on shipping? Anything you'd particularly recommend to look for or stay away from? My camp furnitur...

Pennsic 2019
Anyone else heading to Pennsic this year? (For those who don't know about it, it's the Society for Creative Anachronism's largest event, which starts this coming weekend and lasts for 2 weeks, at a campground near Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania). I'm taking my two boys from Aug. 2 until the 10th. I'd l...

Re: The Gondorian Alpine Walking Stick
Finally found a smith (in Poland) who makes non-decorative ciupagi (Polish Highlander walking stick/hatchets).
He also does a nice variety of other blades.

NYC Tolkien exhibit- Midwest ride share available
Attention Midwest Rangers: my kids have spring break the week of April 1 and we're going to see the Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan Museum in New York City. I'm going to drive from Indianapolis to Hoboken, NJ one day, stay in a hotel that night, take the train into the City and to the museum exhibit t...

...the symbols look quite modern, is it possible to make them look more ''old world''... A question that's been plaguing me as well. Icons that convey modern meaning with timeless symbols...perhaps a waystone for the trailheads, rather than a pedestrian whose garb can't help but be dated. you could...

My biggest concern is that it will be "this scene in the Hobbit came from this life experience" followed by "this scene from the Lord of the Rings came from that life experience."

It just reminds me that people will always take a simple task and make it more complicated than it needs to be.Kortoso wrote:Thank you for sharing this here! This provides, I think, a lot of material for "experimental archeology" - similar to work done regarding later period suspension systems.

Viking-era scabbard attachments
So someone has combined an analysis of archeological finds and period art to try and figure out different ways that Viking-era Norse attached their scabbards to their belts.

Re: Tolkien exhibit coming to New York's Morgan Library
FYI anyone in the Midwest. I will definitely be driving from Indianapolis to NYC to see this exhibit, likely in April or May, when the ice/snow risk in the mountains of Pennsylvania have passed. My van seats seven. Anyone who would want to hitch a ride would be asked to pitch in for gas and toll mon...

Re: On Bedrolls and Comfort
I think another angle on "2) He has spent more time wandering and sleeping in the wilds than any of us have been alive" that seems related to acclimation but slightly different is familiarity with the terrain. In addition to being used to the cold, Aragorn knows the land like the back of ...
