Missed a birthday. The forum just turned 15!
Hey guys. I meant to mention this and it got away from me. This iteration of the forum went online on Feb. 11, 2008. Not quite the irresponsible tweens, but still significant.

Re: Participating in Middle Earth and Where We Fit
As an ex-SCAdian, the fact you listed the SCA as soft LARP and not soft reenactment gave me a chuckle. They really want to be the latter, but in many ways they're very much the former. It's a good list. Not exhaustive but a great outline of ideas. This description is narrowly pointed at for people ...

Re: FINALLY Fleshing Out a Persona
Just had a idea on this. Manwe is the direct analog to Michael the Archangel in Middle Earth. (Leader of the host of Heaven, promoted after the former highest fell and became the primary antagonist) I don't think there is any tradition to take the direct name from a Vala, but what about some form of...

Re: A possibly needless question about Orcs
True. What I wonder is what it would take to change an Orcish heart. Obviously, some hearts are incapable of change, whether by the will of the being themselves or by the will of the one who holds them in thralldom, and a change of heart would not counteract or excuse a lifetime of wickedness. But ...

Participating in Middle Earth and Where We Fit
I posted this to the FB group because of a newcomer's question. It figured I'd cross-post because I can find it more easily here later. There is something about Tolkien's Legendarium that invites the reader to do more than just read. There is a siren's call to participate. And people do. Yes, to a d...

Playing cards
Made a case for some 18th c. Playing cards out of the last of the fabric my ill fated leg wraps. Not intended to be a part of any kit, just a way to keep them together. But it got me wondering. Do we have any evidence of playing cards in the legendarium? Probably in the Hobbit. 7849CB40-C03C-4EFC-A9...

And then there is some decoration on the King's letter. that should be added to the list.
Don't know if it should be classed as Gondorian or Northern. I guess it depends on if it was by Aragorn's hand or a scribe?

Breelander Pillbox hat
I attempted and failed to weave some leg wraps as my Yule gift. Turns out that weaving is hard. In order to not be wasteful I turned the 8 feet I did make into a Hedeby style pillbox hat. 96FC4E1B-94AB-44F0-A7FA-60BCF78EF6EB.jpeg 323DFD9F-9BDA-4B7E-BE68-5E73886E9770.jpeg CDC30E88-C1B1-4037-AD40-97B5...

Dwarven hair color
So Dwalin is described as having a blue beard. I have always assumed that was blue-black just because of the darkness of it.
But I have recent read that miners in cobalt and copper mines can get blue and green hair respectively. Do you think this is a possibility?

Re: Rings of Power- Your thoughts?
I've found this anvil to be an accurate metaphor for the whole show. Wait, that’s really an anvil in the show!?! That hardy and pritchel are literally in the middle. Better not drift anything all the way through! At least it’s radius’ed to the same angle all the way round. Also I know it's "el...

Re: Breelander Names?
Even though they're Men, the prevalence of hobbit-style names in Bree is likely due to the fact that in the early drafts Bree was not a town of mixed Big and Little folk, but was simply another purely hobbit town. Unfortunately, Michael is so non-English etymologically (Hebrew->Latin->Old French->M...

Out of curiosity, Caedmon, were you ever able to revisit this project to refine it further? I absolutely LOVE what you’ve done with it already! Simply beautiful work!! Still working on it. I've finished redesigning the leather parts with tengwar instead of cirth, and am waiting on a wider tablet wo...

Re: What's your opinion on a forum update?
There seems to be a general consensus that a few minor tweaks, adjustments and some tidying up is not a bad idea. If it pleases the group I can go through this thread and get a list of those items that were viewed favorably in one place (probably a new thread to leave this one open or more discussi...
