Re: Indy/Dragons Wood Inn moot early summer 2016

Sounds like fun. Guess I ought to get in something that resembles shape and get the kit shaken out for this.

Re: Indy/Dragons Wood Inn moot early summer 2016

Still trying to make this one. Fourth of July weekend appears to be open right now and finances might even cooperate. Greg, can you clear up the schedule you are proposing for those of us not familiar with the area? How far are we talking about hiking and over what kind of terrain? This could factor...

If this ever gets off the ground, I am sure we can work something out.

Re: Southeast Rangers

I am having issues getting consistent contact with the owner of the site so I have started looking for another location. Just out of curiosity, how many people would be interested in getting something together in the spring, maybe late March? My life went a little topsy-turvy (mostly my own fault) a...

Re: Simple and cheap eating knife

I started my eating kit for SCA and continued for MERF and other medieval hobbies by checking thrift stores and flea markets. Got quite a bit of nice stuff in the collection now.

Re: Leather tooling tips and tricks?

Most of those specialized tools did not exist in the middle ages and there are still examples of beautiful work. I own a fair collection of leatherworking tools but usually stick to a swivel knife (or other good sharp knife), modeling tools probably similar to the ones you used, bevelers and backgro...

Re: Southeast Rangers

OK. I will talk to the landowner and see what I can get scheduled for the fall time frame. I will have to schedule around a couple of events in my life, but I am sure we can work out something.

More to follow.

Re: Looking to naturally darken some leather.

I have seen vinagroon (sp?). It is basically steel wool in vinegar until you get what amounts to a black dye. Remember that vinegar is acidic so a bath in a baking soda solution (as recommended to me by a guy who has used it) might be a good idea to counter the acid after you reach the desired color...

Re: Southeast Rangers

OK...sorry for the delay in continuing this thread and thought. Real life jumped on my back and I had to deal with that first. So, I am still wanting to put together an annual or maybe semi-annual gathering of Rangers here in the Southeast. The question is really, what time of year works best for ea...

Southeast Rangers

Southeast Rangers, I think I have found a place we can gather for a moot. It is in Trenton, SC, and is built as a medieval campground which is used by several groups for events. They have some permanent structures and permanent archery and thrown weapons ranges. They are planning to add a permanent ...

Re: Cold Steel Seax project (continued)

Look at the factory seconds for the seax machetes. I picked up 3 at $8 each and the only thing wrong is the grind of the edge is a hair off.

A bit of a cheat since the pieces are pre-cut, but it's an option for a similar style helm.

Re: Cold Steel Seax project (continued)

I think I used about 9x20, but that allowed me to cut down the tabbed area where the suspension is and leave about 7 inches over the blade. Still not sure what I am going to do with the area between the suspension rings, but I am thinking either some stamping or pyrography in the area. If I burn som...

Re: Cold Steel Seax project (continued)

Did you add a spacer in between the leather pieces? or is it just two pieces stitched together? Single piece folded at the back and sewn along the edge side. This is one of the common styles for seax scabbards in period and allows the blade to be carried edge up, not resting on the blade. The sewin...
