Re: Working on a Bree-lander kit
As I mentioned in the first post, since I'm moving to breeches and stockings for my kit, I need something over my stocking so I don't bring home half the forest in them. I got a lot of leather for pretty cheap at the Tandy Black Friday sale, so I figured I'd take a stab at making some boots, since I...

Re: Useful knots for tarp shelters?
I'd recommend instead learning the taut-line hitch...it's an adjustable slip hitch that lets you change tension on your line without having to tie yet another knot to secure it after you've got it snug. I just looked that one up and tried it. It's so cool! Here's a diagram of it that was helpful fo...

Useful knots for tarp shelters?
Or any knots you folks have found useful a-rangering, really. The reason I ask is that I got a oilskin tarp over the holidays, and when I was messing around with setting it up, I realized that I didn't know knots suitable for some of the tie-off configurations that I wanted to use. Here's the set-up...

Re: The beginning of my kit clothing (pic heavy)
Where did you get rose gardening gloves? Everywhere I've looked they come in pink or have plastic cuffs. And never mind the fact that they don't come large enough for my paws. Do you have.... tiny hands?!?! ;) Kinda small, yes (I'm hobbit-sized), but I got them off Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp...

Re: Sword Oil *on-the-go*
I read that lanolin can be used to prevent rust, so I was wondering if it would be possible to carry a wax of raw wool, the kind with the lanolin still it it? I don't know if it would be greasy enough, but it seems like you could carry a little pouch of it and not have to worry about spilling oil/br...

Re: Discount Arrows
Nemo got some self-nock arrows from that vendor. He talks about them here - http://ranger.budgetauthenticity.org/fo ... ilit=Arrow
I think they ended up being $90ish for a dozen with self-nocks.

Re: Discount Arrows
Self-nocks for $50 is going to be hard to find. There's this store on Etsy - https://www.etsy.com/shop/longbowmaker8 ... d=15913338
For self-nocks it looks like it varies from $55-70, but the store owner is in China, so you might be waiting on shipping for a while...

Re: Custom Seax
The scabbard core looks gorgeous! You did an amazing job on it. It almost seems a shame to cover it in leather - a coat of oil to seal it and give it some shine would be enough. I can see why it'd need the leather for use out in the field, though.

Re: Surcote/Surcoat Shenanigans
At this time they were basically just a big rectangle of lightweight fabric (probably linen, hemp, or possibly wool) with a hole cut for the head. Over time they became closed at the sides, and/or split up the front and back below the waist. When I made the surcote I wear with my kit, it started ou...

Re: Surcote/Surcoat Shenanigans
It's hard to say. The extant jupons of the Black Prince and Charles VI are silk, lined ith linen. Those are obviously not representative of the average surcote, though. I agree that linen would work, as well, so I think the physical separation of the maille from the elements would probably be more i...

Re: Surcote/Surcoat Shenanigans
Thanks for taking the time. No problem - it was fun! So far as the surcote - I think Taurinor is right that it started out as a military garment - I'd expect both to keep the sun off maille on crusade in hot dry climates, and so everyone could tell who that dude in the armor thirty yards away was. ...

Re: Surcote/Surcoat Shenanigans
Short answer – they both existed. Long answer – okay, you asked for it... I prefer to use the spelling “surcoteâ€, simply because “cote†is often used as a synonym for a tunic worn over linens and “sur†means “overâ€. “Surcoat†seems to be a more common spelling, though. Also, ...

Re: Larger tarp shelters
Sorry about the necro-posting, but I was looking up tarp tent setups when I found this video showing how to put two tarps together into a tent -
It reminded me of this topic, so I figured I'd put it up here.

Re: Eating utensils
I use a knife and a pewter (modern and lead-free) spoon. I could have used wood, but I find it a little harder to clean, and you have to be careful with horn spoons and heat. Knife goes on my belt, and the spoon gets tossed in my scrip with my bowl. Something that could be neat to do would be to mak...
