Re: Finally finished - Quiver of Eriador!

Do you think a side strap would help?

More surface area, perpendicular to the direction of the mainstrap.

Re: Middle Earth Military Force Organisation Charts

To support Elleth with respect to the Rangers, Aragorn and his 15 predecessors took the title "Chieftain." This communicates a tribal or at least clannish organization to me. There seems to be some sense of feudal obigation implied. But there doesn't seem to be enough population left to ca...

Re: Introducing myself and my goals

As Greg says, an axe can prove invaluable in winter (and wet weather) if you are going the wool blanket/tarp route. An axe/hawk in one hand and a large knife in the other makes a potent close quarters offense-defense combination for an archer. There is no example of this combination used by Rangers ...

Welcome Ranger!

I don't see an axe mentioned. I imagine it would be important in your area of operation.

Are you a member of Bushcraftusa.com? There is a lot of info there on fieldcraft.

Re: Bedrolls (again!)

Mine is in the middle of a rolling overhaul, but in all honesty I don't see myself using it anytime soon. The rolling miserable crud I've had for the last week after a rashy bite has put the fear of God into me re: Lyme, and even though doc says it's just plain flu, I'm much less inclined to take c...

Re: Beren and Luthien

In the preface, Christopher Tolkien anknowledges that at 93, it's likely his last book. He said that his father felt that 'the Silmarillion' contained three tales worthy of stand-alone books: "The Children of Hurin," "Beren and Luthien," and "The Fall of Gondolin." I w...

Re: Lessons learned, springtime walk

Ugh... just had a Lyme scare. Turned out to be just a 24 hour flu, but still. Harper, I think I'm going to take your advice on the pemerethin. You just spray it on your clothes? And maybe - much as I don't want to - spend less time out in the woods until the tick count goes down a bit. Stupid ticks...

Re: Lessons learned, springtime walk

If you want to keep in character, look into Cedar Oil or Catnip Oil as a repellant. Both should "help" with ticks, too. Thyme Oil is also effective but doesn't seem to last as long and needs to be reapplied more often. While I understand your desire to remain in character, you should reall...

Re: Revisting the text - it's been so long!

I would really loved to have seen the Scouring of the Shire.

Hey! He could still make it! It could be sandwiched in. He would get even more of my money--the movie, theatrical release on Blu-Ray (that always pissed me off but I bought it anyway) and the Director's cut with extras six months later.
