Is there another place to get this issue? The link appears to be broken.

Re: Cloak and Back Quiver

This is the exact sort of cloak I've been looking for. I think I may even be able to make it even with my terrible sewing skills. If it works out I might even make 2. One for spring/fall that uses this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074ZRZ5VN/?coliid=IX9FIVMHI5Q1S&colid=1PYPM3SY461LT&psc=0&...

Re: Cloak and Back Quiver

Anyhow, regarding cloaks I'm increasingly partial to Greg's solution, and hope one day to get around to following his lead. The two things I've absolutely learned though for the next revision: I'll say one thing about this hobby: it teaches you the difference between "costume" and "c...

Re: The Name of What We Do

I have no problem with the name. For me, if somebody feels that calling ourselves Middle Earth Reenactors is too nerdy, than this really isn't the place for them. That said, I could see calling it practical literary research, or some such pompous sounding nomenclature. In reality it seems we are try...

Re: Riverine Ranger

That sounds incredible. I am taking on a project of building a cedar strip canoe this summer, myself assuming I ca cobble up enough gold for materials (Cedar doesn't really grow in NH). I considered making a birch bark canoe, but the Birch in my home range are all fighting off an invasive disease an...

Re: Coal mine

I use a propane forge myself. You can build them fairly cheaply. They are a bit different from coal, but the fuel to run them is cheaper and easier to get a hold of.

Re: Coal mine

You should check around your area for suppliers. Speak to other smiths. I live in the back end of nowhere New England, and I can drive 45 minutes to get coal from a store.

Re: Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern

Boots have been a thing I've been thinking about, and after some research this plainsmen pattern seems to fit in pretty well from both an historical and Tolkienian Fantasy perspective. Certainly they seem to need a bit of modification, primarily that neither Tolkien's Rangers nor 12th-14th century ...

Re: Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern

Thanks for the input. I agree that boots are crucial. Based on everything I've seen here and on Leatherworker.net (lots of knowledge, but the community is not overly helpful to noobs) I think when I make them I will do the plainsmen style boot using 12-13 oz sole leather for the soles, and something...

Re: Wargbiter - Dwarf made fighting knife

This is a gorgeous piece to be sure. I'm curious though, regarding your full tang construction. The books, understandably don't cover knife tangs, but in the movies everything seems to be hidden tang? I also wonder if full tang was used in the medieval period at all? In any case it is amazing work. ...

Re: workbench for leather crafting

The workbench from Harbor Freight is likely fine. Even the ones that Home Depot sells for $75 are fine for leather working IMHO. The most important thing when banging on Leather (or softer metal like copper) is to put something underneath it. I use a granite block with a piece of scrap leather, canv...

Re: A Map of my home range.

Most of the complex stuff happens before GIMP--sourcing, equalizing and rendering the digital elevation model being the biggest hurdle. As for the second part, it's hard to age printed maps because most printers use water soluble ink, so when you immerse the map in a tea bath or similar, the map di...

SCA Persona Research

On the Rangers of the North site, and on this forum I have seen several folks who do SCA personas based around real world rangers. Basically the historic analogue of what Tolkein's inspiration for a Dunedain Ranger could have been. I've sort of skirted around the edges of the SCA for a few years now...

Re: New Guy Looking for Group

Welcome, Kleenur! I'm glad you found the forum! I think I was the one who pointed you in this direction from the Rangers of the North FB group! I understand having a lack of rangers in your area. I live just outside of Denver, CO, and when I first started haunting the forums here I was dismayed to ...
