Re: Buy this book TODAY!
n.b., since the original link is gone. Cinead is referring to Gerry Barker's "Some Thoughts on Scouts and Spies" available on Amazon here and also discussed here . While the book is aimed at those reenacting scouts along the Colonial American frontier, particularly Tennessee and Kentucky, ...

Re: 2017 New Skill / Ranger Goal Challenge!
Fall is winding up, the year is winding down, time for a checkin! Part 1 (most important): By the first day of fall, be able to make it to the top of the giant [hill] behind our farm without stopping for breath. Part 2: By the first day of fall, be able to get 8 / 10 arrows in an 18†circle from 1...

I think it's an ingenious application for those toggles!
Mostly though, now I'm wondering what all that linen canvas is teasing.

The scary thing is none of those hit a part of the brain that's necessarily immediately fatal. For his sake, I hope he hit the moat hard and fast right after. Poor dude.

Re: workbench for leather crafting
Cool! I *adore* oiltan! If I recall correctly it's a surprisingly modern process, using modern chrome tanned leather as a base. BUT I've been really surprised by how modern-finish a look one can get with traditional materials and techniques, so I'm not about to say that gorgeous Kodiak stuff would l...

Re: Ranger quiver Mark I. (Pics included)
Very cool! I'm curious about your strap attachment now: can we see what the back of your quiver looks like? I hear what you're saying about arrows shifting: for the time being I've been compensating by using my bow hand to check against the quiver foot as I reach back, and adjust as necessary. It's ...

Re: workbench for leather crafting
I have two of exactly that bench in my craft room. Being Harbor Freight, they of course aren't as good as what they look like in the pictures: it's not REALLY a 4" thick cabinetmaker's workbench top - it's about 3/4" or so with edging strips around it. That said, they're entirely strong en...

Re: feedback on leather stamps? (design elements of Eriador)
regarding an embossed wheel - that's a cool idea! I've thought about it, but the shapeways process won't give me clean lines all the way around unless I do it in something cast like bronze. Might be worth a try though, at least for a smaller size design. :) I use a small arbor press, and I'd imagine...

Hunh! fun! Yeah... I'd expect the lawyers would get him if it was labeled formerly, but you never know. I've seen housing developments still named "Rivendell" or "Lothlorien" so presumably at least at one time the estate turned a blind eye. I rather doubt that's still the case th...

Re: Staff/sword questions, advice needed.
For a staff - perhaps working down a large ash shaft like this one? Ash Spear Pole (You can find similar ones from tool supply companies, but not really any cheaper I think) Alternately, look around for a replica of a medieval pilgrim's staff. The things evolved for pretty much exactly the purposes ...

Waste not, want not...
So there is next to our hay pasture a certain angry old stump. Old Man Biter he is.. and I'd lost more arrows than I care to think of to his gnarly old hide. I'd given him a wide berth for a time... but this summer I'd had such success stumpshooting with my medieval roving head I thought I could get...

Nice!
Out of curiosity, is there much bouncing when running with that thing? Or does the blanketroll serve to keep it weighted down?
