Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

Oh I'm so happy it's a help! The rest is.. coming. Probably midsummer at this rate, maybe not all the pieces yet - but coming. Here's the embroidery on the front waistband: merf-trousers-elven-embroidery.jpg Ideally you do a sort of celtic knot over-under as you embroider it, but I don't think I man...

Re: Mannish

Ha! I'd seen that. Spent soooo much time combing that little word list.

I think our opinion will just have to vary though - all those k's and raz's and kkh's and such. Sounds to me like Hebrew with a head cold. :)

....and this is what it ended up looking like: merf-trousers-calves-02-front.jpg merf-trousers-calves-02-back.jpg merf-trousers-calves-01-side.jpg MONSTER project. And the name fits - it's an incredible amount of fitting, fiddling and fine hand work to make the things... and probably about 6" o...

Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

embroidery - sure thing! I thing my original pattern is long gone, but I'll draw up the design and post it. Anyhow, the problem I ran into is basically this - I'd already cut my stirrup based on the center of the leg tube, centering on the seam - symmetry, right? Well derp, the leg and foot aren't s...

Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

OHMYGOSH. FINALLY finished these darn things. I ran into a stumbling block last year and lay them aside for other projects. I picked them back up after Christmas and just ran the last stitch a couple days ago. I'm writing up how I handled the calf area and will post shortly. Come spring and decent w...

Re: Basic kit/"Getting started" list?

That is awesome! What a wonderful resource y'all are creating! One place I do think our form of "re-enacting" differs from the regular sort is that - since we're just out by ourselves - you don't have to wait until everything's perfect before hitting the woods. Just a piece or two at a tim...

Re: Mannish

Hunh.. that is an interesting topic! First, when doing a project last year that required a lot of westron research, I ran across this book and really recommend it: Words of Westernesse: Tolkien's Languages of Men and Hobbits ( Spoiler: there's a short writeup of it and a couple other books by the sa...

Re: Latter Age Back Quiver

The cover makes me think that the users of this type of quiver were more interested in keeping their arrows safe and secure rather than having them quickly and immediately to hand. Maybe archers would have dropped this quiver to the waist when preparing to shoot but carried them on their back when ...

Re: Revisting the skinny-sack bedroll

Would it be better to roll the hem to make a tube for the drawstring? in some ways it feels more modern, but it honestly seems like a lot less effort for a historical hand-sewer than embroidering all those little button holes. I'm having a hard time finding anything on the actual history of drawstr...

Re: Latter Age Back Quiver

Moving the lower attachment point higher up the side of the quiver will change the angle that the arrows rest at. If the strap passes under your arm and goes immediately horizontal to meet the quiver about 1/2way up, you'll notice a wonderful difference hunh. I would never have thought of that. Int...

Re: Sheath Designs for critique

Oh those are nice! What culture would this sheath be from? You say Numenorean derived patterns, so I assume Dunedain? Aesthetically, I like the "elven quiver" shape on the right, though I confess I'm skeptical about the drawstring portion at the top. The seax-style edging on the middle one...

Re: Revisting the skinny-sack bedroll

Oh yeah - no one's talking about using film-prop stuff in real situations; just experimenting with the carriage solution. A bedroll that's attached to the strap on its side instead of having the strap go through the center of the roll isn't unheard of... It's occurred to me that one of the real bene...
