Woodsmen of Mirkwood seax
Made this seax blade a few weeks ago. 8'blade, right at 1 1/2" wide 1/4" thick 5160 spring steel deep etched patina As I am intrigued by the Woodmen of Mirkwood, I see a blade like this well suited to their needs. From shelter making to butchering to self defense, it's perfect for me! Noth...

Re: Beornings v. Woodmen (eek! research!)
I've always seen in my mind's eye the Woodmen of Mirkwood taking on the Beorning culture (without the shape shifting abilities) with a very healthy dose of the early trans-Appalachian settlers into the Ohio and Cumberland River Valleys. Some crop cultivation with hunting being a major source of food...

Re: Field tools vs. weapons: how much do you specialize?
I won't carry something that isn't a tool first. Period. Crossbow? Hell of a hunting tool and one hell of a weapon 8" wide, thick seax? I can butcher both man and beast. Belt axe? It does it all... If I added a targe (which I won't because I don't need one as a tool) I would have a shield and w...

Re: Middle Earth ambient sounds
I downloaded only the audio off of YouTube via KeepVid. I then ran the audio files through an online converter to convert them from M4A to MP3.....
They now reside in my iTunes! Perfect when I need it for falling asleep or studying!

Re: Bit o' gear....
I got it off of eBay, from Eastern Europe.
I have never been able to identify the maker from the mark on the blade, but it is forged and the steel is well made.
The pattern is old, old, old...and is generically known as a "Rhineland" or "German" pattern.
