Re: Ranger Pants

I need to make me some Ranger pants. A pair of authentic pants/trousers is quickly rising on my to-do list as I expect to finish some linen braes I have been working on for leggings practice within a week. And my moccasin project will be going haltingly for a bit as I will need to stop soon and tak...

Hmm, that could be made into a rather interesting Seax without to much trouble.

Back to the basics: What is a Ranger?

Ok, so what is a Ranger? What makes a Ranger? And why do you want to be one? I sometimes find that it is good to go back to the basics and reexamine my core attitudes. Anyway this evening I began to think of this forum, it's purpose and what it is to be a Ranger. And then I began to wonder if I real...

Re: Sodhopper style boots pattern!

I've been using a linen thread suggested by Caedmon and have found it to be quite durable... not as strong as a certain synthetic thread I once used, but it's still tough. Plus I've been sucked into the world of authenticity, and I can't escape. What if I waxed my linen thread before use? I have so...

Kaelin, does this work for you on garment leather? I've only used the saddle stitch on vegetable tanned leather because I had thought that the soft garment style leather wouldn't work well with the saddle stitch.

Re: Sodhopper style boots pattern!

No, you don't want to use a reinforced running stitch for shoes. It is best to use a lapped stitch, which looks like this:

This also makes gluing and cutting easier.

Re: Comments on Patterns/Instructions for Ranger Kits

I've gotten everything completely finished but the collar now, which I have been working on and expect to be done with tonight. Then the last little bit will be reinforcing the bottom of my notch with a blanket stitch, apparently. So if you could please explain how to do that whenever is convenient...

Can someone add me to the MER Facebook page?

I wasn't aware that there was a Facebook page until the site went down. could one of the admins add me to it so that I can let people know that we're back in business?

Re: Verisimilitude

If you literally walked out of TT, then I am very impressed... I really did, and what's more impressive is that my date that night still consented to marry me a few months later. But she still teases me about it. (the walking out, not the marrying) There are very few stories that I take that seriou...

Verisimilitude

It all comes down to that. Does it feel real? This is why I am a hard-core reenactor.* This is why I loved PJ's FOTR, and walked out of Two Towers. When I first read LOTR, I was sucked into a world that I believed in. Was it fantastic? Yes, but I believed. The Hobbit was slightly less believable, it...

Re: Cloak Material

Ok, cucullus, by that I take it that you mean an unlined medium length circle cloak with a hood? Why have you chosen the cucullus? Are you wanting to do dual service with a Roman or Romano-British/early Saxon reenactment group? Are you adverse to natural fibers whose weave that was not common in the...
