Re: Hard kit from my latest trek

Thanks, everyone! I was able to get hold of a hanging scale so I weighed everything. Everything in that picture, including the walking stick and the costrel filled with water comes in at 30 lbs. The tarp/blanket/rope/tentstakes/axe roll is 12 lbs, the bag part of the swag is 5 lbs, the full costrel ...

Re: Hard kit from my latest trek

Taurinor, it looks better every time! Way to get out there so early in the season! I'll second the numbered photo...that really oughta become a standard; so clear and concise. Raising the bar around here, folks! Thanks! It was really mice, actually - highs around 75, but it didn't get lower than 40...

Re: Hard kit from my latest trek

A few different methods have been discussed in a few different threads, but I don't know that we have one big thread for it. Brian made a video on the swag, which is where I learned about it: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j3KCVTxW2Hc

Re: Hard kit from my latest trek

Brilliant! Would this be for Breelander kit? Out of curiosity, any idea what it all weighs? Thanks! Most of it is meant to do double duty as medieval trekking gear, but I think it fits my Breelander kit pretty well, too. As for the weight, I thought someone might ask, but I don't have a scale. I'll...

Hard kit from my latest trek

[*]I recently did another overnighter at Caledon State Park, so I figured while I had all my gear together I'd take some pictures. https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/s960x960/11174648_10155552715145427_2904843147760625907_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_sid=be0b5f&_nc_ohc=iX4ThGgpfs0AX-w9Z...

Re: Found this and it warmed my heart!

That is a wonderful quote, but I've read that it's from Ursula LeGuin. I think the confusion comes from the fact that she was paraphrasing a similar sentiment expressed by Tolkien. From thetolkienist.com: I have claimed that Escape is one of the main functions of fairy-stories, and since I do not di...

Re: New Canteen/Cooking pot

That's very cool! What are the dimensions? I can't guess from the picture. Also, how is it used to carry water? Does the lid fit on very tightly?

Re: No stitch leather sheath

It certainly wouldn't need much else to hold it together. If you wanted to make something like this out of birch bark in the woods because you need a replacement sheath, some natural cording to make the tip a little more secure would make it very effective.

Re: No stitch leather sheath

I tried this, because I had a little leather around and it looked neat. Overall, I agree with ineffableone - probably good for a temporary sheath. The issue that I had was that I like to push my knives into their sheathes a ways, so the friction keeps them in place. With this method, the tip was not...

Re: No stitch leather sheath

That's really interesting! I've never made one like that, but my guess is that it is for a single edged knife, and the edge of the knife faces the open "seam". The leather is sandwiched together by the bands, but there's not actually anything to cut. If it wasn't snug enough, the bands mig...

Re: new enameled canteen + carrier

All very practical reasons! I think the enamel makes it look kind of "rustic" the way a shiny metal one wouldn't, and it's practical, to boot.

Re: new enameled canteen + carrier

That is some incredible work! I love how you just say "after carving a stopple..." - I tried carving a stopple once, and it was not something I would mention so casually. Is there any particular reason you picked this canteen over a replica of an earlier style like you mentioned? It seems ...

That's so cool! You have an amazing talent for seeing the potential in mundane objects. Have you given any thought to aging the brass rivets?

Re: Brisk Morning Outing

I've been somewhat hesitant to use oilcloth, mainly because I want my ranger kit to do double-duty as a 13th century woodsman kit, and I believe oilcloth wasn't invented until something like the 17th century, but I could be wrong about that. Still, I don't think I can argue with its effectiveness, ...

I took some measurements of my leg and then drew out a sort of pentagram shape (with the point being at my toes) and cut it out of canvas. I then stapled the canvas into a tube and made sure it looked like it fit, then went to the leather.
