They didn't have the style I chose in non-plated brass. I do have some FeCl that I have been saving for my first Damascus blade, whenever that happens to take shape  . I wonder if the FeCl will do the job?

I look forward to the pics, everyone! Jim, I would love to see the shoemakers in action. I landed on Crete on my way to Saudi Arabia back in 1991. Couldn't see anything though, it was dark when we landed and we took off probably an hour later. I'm thinking of wetting my boots thoroughly and wearing ...

Darkening a belt buckle

Yesterday on my out of control shopping spree at the leather shop, I picked up two belts and buckles for my son and myself. The buckles are solid brass with I guess a chrome coating. I knew when I bought them that they would need to be darkened. I can think of at least one way to darken them that is...

Yeah, most of the stuff I have for clothing will be replaced probably this year. I have enough that will maybe look like a ranger at our Renaissance Faire, but not really in the wild. So I have set out to work on that now (see my thread about boots). I am about to begin work on a belt for myself and...

Hi Jim, That is some good-looking stuff there. The mask: Would you use it during cold weather treks? I could imagine that it would be useful as a camouflage item, to hide some skin. It looks like you've gotten a good kit up and running. What about your ranger clothes? Any pics of that? By the way, I...

Boots

We had a discussion once before on boots. Well, I'd like to revive it. The boots that I currently have - and made myself - are the kind that most hippies were wearing a couple decades ago. They are simple to make with no real sole and lacing up the front. These are the boots that I will be wearing t...

I've been wondering about a knife sort of like that, but I didn't envision the handle being used as a striker. Not a bad idea.
If I can learn to beat my supply of L6 into submission, then perhaps some of those will be put on the short list of things to make.

Much to think about! I've got a couple of camp knives forged out of 12" files. They are annealed and ready for some shaping up and drilling for the handle slabs. These are for myself and my son. but I'll post pics to get some critique on them. The fire striker is something to think about. First...

Ranger related blacksmithing

Posted with permission, though this may be in the wrong place. Anyway, I will be getting help with my blacksmithing soon and will hopefully be offering my wares to the public. I want to make items suitable for the ranger in the woods, in camp, wherever. That is where you- the rest of the rangering c...

Not more experienced, actually far less experienced I'll wager. But I'm willing to help out however I can. Can someone let me know what would be expected of the two different positions? I'm looking to get more involved than I currently am.

Well, I tromped around in the woods a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn't a ranger-related treck. I and a forester from work were mapping out a section so our company could put in an irrigation pond and a truck turn-around for the log trucks. Made me REAL anxious to get out there SOON!!! P.S. I'm try...

Nothing important to say

Just wanted to say hey, and I'm glad to be here. Hoping to have a better year for getting into the woods this time around.
I like the new site and hope it stays around along with Andy's site. Looking great guys.
