Re: New belt knife project

I know you were not trying to make any historical claims and that is totally fine. I just think there are more "plausible" options for a very affordable knife. Though, as this is for SCA then as the name suggests creative anachronisms are totally acceptable.

Re: New belt knife project

Well, I admire your desire to "repurpose" things Ringulf. However, I find the idea of taking a stainless steal steak knife and making it a "belt knife" somewhat...interesting. I believe Udwin posted a very fascinating post on the materials found in Middle Earth based on his resea...

Re: Hobbit Socks

I don't think anyone is looking to make a clone of anything, but something based heavily on reality. I think these socks could be made to fit nicely down in a boot. Made of wool to keep out the dampness, just like the passage quoted above states. And knowing what I know about historical garments of ...

Re: Hobbit Socks

I will say for the purpose of recreating Hobbits, I would want to go with a plain color as shown in the period image I posted, so I will probably not be using my highland bag hose just because they are to obviously Scottish. And I would think they should be made to fit to the boots you wearing. Bilb...

Re: Hobbit Socks

Bag hose were a common style of stocking in the 17th and 18th century and very popular in the Scotland. They were worn under the kilt, but could also be worn with breeches with strips of material tied around to hold them up. There are patterns out there I am sure. I personally have not tried making ...

Re: Hobbit Socks

Excellent Udwin, thank you! Also recently uncovered these images of 18th century bag hose. These could easily be made to fit right into the boot. In the images above the boots on Bilbo seem to reach to just above the middle of the thigh. Broadcloth wool sewn up would also proved a nice layer of warm...

Re: Hobbit Socks

Yes, in fact I think in Tolkien's original illustrations, Bilbo's feet are fairly proportionate to his size. Once I'm near my computer I'll post that image. (Posting from my phone)

Re: Hobbit Socks

Keep in mind that Tolkien imagined the Hobbits as Victorian era English Country folk.

Hobbit Socks

I was recently working on revamping my Hobbit kit and writing an essay on my kit and the items I use. It is my belief that Hobbits traveling outside of the Shire would wear boots. I believe the Professor even mentioned that he intended for the Hobbits of the Fellowship to wear them while on their ad...

Re: Brisk Morning Outing

If you were to leave a cache of food stores or other valuable resource, that oilcloth would be the PERFECT material to wrap it in. I would think it would keep it safe for quite some time! Great suggestion!

Re: Fun with research and weapons!

Udwin, your research is incredible. Thanks for continuing to raise the bar. As far as your weapon choice, I have always been attracted to a spear for the common man. And there are certainly many many references to them in LOTR. Currently I am reading ROFK and I've found many. I also found an interes...

Re: Brisk Morning Outing

Glad I could help supply you with that oil cloth, Greg! Your kit and bed roll looks great!

As Greg mentioned we have this stuff for sale at $12.00 a yard and it is excellent. I use it as well for lean to and shelter halves. If any of you would be interested I'd be happy to hook you up.
