Re: Need some help

That is going to be a very personal decision. Personally, I really enjoy making things myself. It usually involves a lot of time and swearing, but for me, it's worth it. My fiancé does not understand it at all, and wishes I would just leave making things to professionals. To each their own. From wh...

Re: Need some help

If you're ok with using modern pants, these might work for you: http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/m19 ... pants.html

If you wanted, you could sew the pockets shut and replace the fly, but under a tunic none of that would be visible.

Re: Getting started, old and new - kit photos in the woods

Really interesting post! But no fair, saying you got out in almost full garb and then not putting up any kit photos! B. I had braintan leggins and a woolen clout - I'd forgotten how much convenient those are. If memory serves, some variety of early medieval trousers came as seperate legs.. I think I...

Re: The beginning of my kit clothing (pic heavy)

I have been wanting to replace my tunic for a while, so when I found a long wool coat at a thrift store, I bought it and took it apart for material. This is an in progress picture: http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l331/elliotnburton/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpse0824862.jpg As you can see, the body i...

Re: Medieval "Pants"

One site that I would suggest is Historic Enterprises - http://historicenterprises.com/mens-c-99/leg-wear-c-99_117/ It looks like they have small sizes for some of their pants options, and they also have some products that can be made to order using your measurements. You're going to pay more, thoug...

Re: Trench Coat Recycling

I think the flap (cape?) across the back of the shoulders on the first one might make it a bit harder to convert. It's a very modern looking feature, and it's most likely important to the overall construction of the coat, so not easily removable.

Re: Bow Problem?

I literally cannot believe this. I always thought it was fingertips!! Sweet mother of Balrog!! Its like Im a whole new ranger! There are advocates for both ways. The deep hook allows you to relax the back of your hand, which you have to keep tight when drawing with your fingertips. Some people find...

Re: Hithlain

I know a lot of dyes don't stick well to artificial fibers - typically the color is put in during manufacturing. If you want to try, though, I would go with these guys: http://www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/idye-for-natural-and-poly-fabrics.html From what I've read, most customers seem to think they kno...

Re: Color variations in "uniform" clothing

I agree with Rik - any uniformity in premodern woodsmen would probably be due to function rather than design. If you're interested in doing some sort of uniform, though, I would suggest considering the livery issued to the archers of Flintshire and Cheshire by the Black Prince in 1346 and 1359. It c...

Re: Fine-tuning travelling kit

I really like the mat - it's a really creative way to deal with a problem your rangering environment challenges you with. I can't imagine it's very heavy, but do you have any idea how the weight compares to a canvas groundcloth or an extra blanket?

That's amazing! I especially like how you used the middle shield to keep the flap down.

Ah, thanks Udwin. I remembered the quote, but not so well the context.
