Re: LIGHTWEIGHT SHELTER???

$205 for a 9x9? A little out of my price range. Might be well worth the money, but I will stick to my 12 oz painter's tarp. I cut down a 9x12 into a 9x9 (I am 6'5" in stocking feet). I haven't had to try it in serious wet yet, but I am fairly confident of it. And based on the tentsmith site, oi...

Re: Not sure where to fit in this one....

Very nice. I once met Mors Kochanski while I was in Canada with the Army and he was the first person to show me what a simple Mora knife is capable of. Up until then I was in the "Cult of Rambo" thinking bigger is better and I would need an expensive blade. His knife of choice was a Mora a...

Re: You are exactly the corps I'm looking for.

Welcome. You have set a serious goal for yourself, one definitely worthy of song. I wish you all the best on the completion of this quest. Some of us older folks are still working up to hiking the Palmetto Trail and parts of the Appalachian Trail. I look forward to hearing about your exploits as the...

Re: On shield shapes...

The Bayeux Tapestry is a depiction of events in 1066. During this time the style of shields was going through a change along with the style of fighting. Prior to this time, the round shield dominated most of England and Northern Europe and fighting was generally done on foot. Horses were for getting...

Re: Projects for September WIPs

I like the way these are coming out. The file work has that touch of hand-crafted artisan production lacking in so many production pieces nowadays. Remember that I intend for this to be a useable knife not a wall hanger and those that put their faith in a blade want quality good that won't fail in a...

Re: Projects for September WIPs

Always fun trying to find that sweet spot between correct balance and too big a pommel. I trust your judgement in the end.

Re: Projects for September WIPs

Looking good. Really like the handle material for Ru's knife. The eket is looking good too. The crossguard looks nice. You might be able to go a little smaller on the pommel depending on the size the handle ends up so it doesn't hang too far over the sides of the handle. Will be watching as the deve...

Re: Museum Replicas Viking Leather Drawstring Pouch w/coins

Cool! From MRL's upclose pictures, I'm assuming the coins aren't copies or based on an actual extant coin? The design kind of looks like a stylized mountain (Erebor?) to me. It'd be really nice if they sold extra coins separately without the pouch, I would probably pick some up. I agree. I would pi...

Re: Lone archer against charging spearmen

Interesting. I am not sure I would hang out long enough for them to close the distance without some level of support. I think I would shoot and back off and hope they would spread out a bit and wear down since they are armored and I would be less so. Staged ambushes are definitely the tactic I would...

Re: WMA - Spear Work

I am a bit of a fan of having a spear. My only issue is the difficulty of carrying both my spear and my bow (72" longbow). Pretty much it is one or the other, though I am rarely out without a staff of some type.

Re: Some musings on longswords and rangering.

Finally got the time to read through this and figured I might weigh in on it. I agree completely with Ursus on the nature of the longsword. These are not the Conan-esque swords of the movies and, with the proper training, are well equipped to handle many situations on the battlefield. That being sai...

Re: Projects for September WIPs

I know how frustrating it can be when your projects don't come out the way you want them too. Trust me when I say you do great work and there is no reason to quit because life has thrown a few curves your way. It might be that you need to step back a bit and get your passion for the art back. I don'...

Re: Projects for September WIPs

Both of those blades are looking good. I have always liked the patterns you get when working with rasps. I also like that straight blade for Ruinferil. Once it has a handle, I expect it will be a great blade as always. I know what you mean about getting projects done on timelines. I always seem to h...

I'm still trying to make this happen for 4th of July weekend. If the date changes, I will need to know to request time off.
