Re: Scenario - May 2014
OK...threat assessment. The four around the fire are the least threat. The fire will hamper their night vision, even for goblins, meaning that me alone in the deep dark woods will be harder to see. After that it is time for sentry removal. Take the nearest one when he isn't looking (I agree that the...

Re: Cold Steel Seax project (continued)
Scabbard had to back to the drawing board since I didn't quite get the dimensions right. Got a chance to do some different tooling on the utility knife sheath. That looks great! I love the tooling and the colors, will this be worn at the back? I am working on a sheath now myself, hope to have pics ...

Re: Waterproof Ranger boots?
Having worn all kinds of boots in all kinds of terrain, nothing short of rubber or vinyl will be truly waterproof. You can add mixtures to any full grain leather to make them more resistant. Carry lots of socks and change often. Treat the leather well and try to avoid water as best you can.

Re: Cold steel seconds
I got 3. One has a very slight curve to the blade, and the other 2 are slightly off center on the grind of the edge. Nothing likely to prevent use.

Re: Eating utensils - possible find
I generally carry a wood or horn spoon, have a fork to pull meat out of the pot, and have my belt knife for any necessary cutting. Haven't found a need for a set of dedicated utensils except for feast in the SCA.

Incredible. If ANYONE finds these for sale, please post it up. I would love to have one for my kit. Or maybe one of you crafty types could create one.

Re: Trek Season
I would like to walk the AT from end to end at some point, but I will need to get in better shape prior to making those trips.

Trek Season
OK. Had a really long winter, but I am now back in SC and retired from the Army. Now is the time to get out and trekking. The current plan is to walk parts of the Palmetto Trail, first in modern kit to check the routes then in Ranger gear. What are the rest of you looking forward to doing this year?

Re: Cold Steel Seax project (continued)
It's hidden. Once the plastic handle comes off, the remaining tang is too narrow for my paws. In order to make it work, I added a thin leather plate between the handle slabs. There are actually 5 layers of leather hardened and epoxied together. The center is just thick enough to match the thickness ...

In the pouch on my hip. Couldn't figure out where to fit them on the knife or sheath. In a pinch, I have the linen thread though.Peter Remling wrote:Very nice ! Middle Earth survival knife... Where's the fish hooks and flint and steel ?
