Certainly not on its own, nor is it very thick--but it definitely supplements the bedroll pretty well.

Re: Sierra Strider Hard Kit Breakdown

OMG your goat has grown so much from your hiking videos! Cuuuuuuute! [...] Regarding your sore shoulder - I'm kinda hesitant to say this, since I know your modern hiking experience is so extensive [...] Yeah, he's now the largest member of our family, at over 180 lbs. And your suggestions...

Persona: Moardon, Dúnedain Scribe

https://i.imgur.com/BjzwJFk.jpg?1 Moardon was born on 2 June, TA 2945 and grew up on a small farm on the edges of the Drúedain forest. As a young man, he joined the the Gondorian army and was picked out for the ranger corps due to his skill in woodcraft. It quickly became obvious, however, that he...

Sierra Strider Soft Kit Breakdown

https://i.imgur.com/TN4KSdp.jpg?1 The soft kit is a fair bit simpler than my hard kit , as of now. The tunic is a linen "Viking tunic" from armstreet with the trim removed and dyed a darker green. I also added a hood for sun protection. The pants are Armstreet Thorsberg pants. I originall...

Sierra Strider Hard Kit Breakdown

https://i.imgur.com/TN4KSdp.jpg?1 I've finally gotten my kit sufficiently put together to post a writeup, at least of the core. There are some minor elements missing and others in flux, but here it goes. https://i.imgur.com/BjzwJFk.jpg?1 More or less the core of my hard kit is my chest harness, an ...

Re: Starting to Assemble a Dwarven Toolkit

What grit of stone is that? the honest answer is that I don't know, I don't even know what kind of stone it is By the color, I'd guess silicon carbide, but it could just as easily be aluminum oxide. Not strictly 'natural', but perhaps fitting for a dwarf, since they're essentially amalgamated gemst...

I would If I were closer to you, it would cost more to ship them out to you than they are on tandy
I believe I AM close to you and reckon I could weld up a fair few of these in short order, if you're still on the lookout.

Re: Cotton, Coffee, and Chocolate

where did you find reference to sunflowers, oranges, and cadamom? Those don't ring a bell for me. From FOTR , Chapter 1: Inside Bag End, Bilbo and Gandalf were sitting at the open window of a small room looking out west on to the garden. The late afternoon was bright and peaceful. The flowers glowe...

Re: Hypothermia and how to not die from it

That's a nice guide, Sierra. Would you mind if I moved it to 'getting started'? There'd be less of a chance of it getting buried, so it'll stay available to the right people. Sure. I'm thinking about doing a few more, so would it be possible to change the title to something like "wilderness fi...

Re: All plants, animals, food, etc. mentioned in The Hobbit

The fun thing I think is that I'm fairly certain that happy-go-lucky sense of "Pippin" is in great part due to the Professor's own work and of course Billy Boyd's performance. The name had Frankish/Carolingian regal connotations previously. Rather like the Biblical "Nimrod" - a ...

Re: All plants, animals, food, etc. mentioned in The Hobbit

A little more research reminds me that species of cotton were domesticated in both the old and new worlds--in India, in the case of the old. Therefore, all of those undefined words in its etymological lineage probably mean 'cotton'. Qutn , the Arabic progenitor, is of unknown origin, but may be deri...

Re: All plants, animals, food, etc. mentioned in The Hobbit

there are some things on there that I didn't expect, like coffee, for some reason I have always thought of that as something that wouldn't be in middle earth and I'm a bit disappointed to see that chocolate isn't on there, hot chocolate is one of my favorite things to brew mid trek I'm as surprised...
