Re: Hello there!
Welcome!
Wow! 100 miles in four days is no small thing! Very cool.
Any fun tips or stories to share?
Gosh it must be frustrating to actually be in Britain. On the one hand so close to the country and history that inspired the good professor.. on the other so many crowds and laws.

Re: A Case for Back Quivers
I also found a quiver mentioned in an inquisition of the manor of Barrow on Soar in Charnwood Forest from 1273. A few of the renters paid in hunting equipment - 20 barbed arrows, worth 10d; a sheaf of 12 arrows, 6d; and 1 quiver and 13 arrows, worth 18d (page 157). Since arrows appear to be worth a...

Re: A Case for Back Quivers
Yes, it works (if there isn't a cloak involved).... I concur! With regard to the period illustrations, of course history is written by the literate. A preserved tapestry will belong to the highborn and it will glorify their activities, so there's a bit of built-in bias there. I wonder what the earl...

Re: A Case for Back Quivers
I am no historian by any means so take what I say lightly but, if I'm not mistaken most quivers were used by archers in warfare. Archers would use ground quivers so they could shoot more than a dozen or two dozen arrows. I'm sure they also used hip quivers but at the same time archers more than lik...

Re: A Case for Back Quivers
Hunh - that's an interesting idea! :) FWIW, I have never ever had a problem with arrows falling out. Not once. Ever. I think it's because: - actually bending so one's head is beneath one's waist is really quite rare (bend at the knees) - a proper quiver is a bit soft, and so conforms to the body eno...

Re: Seax and Thrower Combo
.. scared to throw it because no safe place to do it, or scared to throw it for fear of damaging the knife?
(I imagine Will's knife had quite a few scars on it by the end of his first week apprenticing. )

Re: Dúnedain Formal Wear? Court Dress? Etc.
I'm actually quite fond of the lines in those garments: I think Lee / WETA did a fantastic job. Also, I think it reasonable that (what remains of) Arnorian fashion would be influenced by the elves, though still very much retaining its own identity. This is another piece you might look for inspiratio...

Re: Has anyone made a coiled straw archery target?
cloth tube... oh! For the funnel? That makes sense! I was thinking of using a canning funnel: it seems about the right size.. I checked one of our straw bales and sadly the stalks are cut far too short to use as is. Drat it! Well... we're raising a small head of wheat this year. I guess now I know w...

Has anyone made a coiled straw archery target?
I keep losing my straw bale targets to the livestock! They keep saying something about needing fresh bedding... :) I'm thinking of making something like these and leaving it up permanently: target-archery.jpg I'd just order one, but all the suppliers I can find are in Europe and shipping something s...
