No I didn't handle too much as I had no serious money to spend. I did like the antiqued Chen Franseca though. My brother Mike loves all thrown weapons. I can appreciate them but I've never been real keen on throwing my weapon away.

We just happened to discuss Tom Brown on the woodcraft section of the forum. Which of his books have you read ? I have only read one of them, I have it around somewhere.

The test quiver/bag is fairly small and will only carry about 10 arrows. I'll eventually get around to making a war quiver/bag which should be big enough for 3 score arrows. I like Andy's idea of having broadhead sheaths for hunting a little seperate from field or bodkins. Broadheads would get caugh...

These are a couple of shots of the test quiver I made early this year. It's a cross between a arrow bag and a quiver. As a test I didn't dye the canvas. The quiver/bag is long enough to completely cover the arrows or can be lowered to expose the fletchings. Very quiet in the woods as the arrows are ...

There were a number of "hunting" quivers around 20 years ago that had straps like a backpack. The quiver hung vertically down the center of ones' back and the fletched end of the arrows was behind your head reducing profile and the drag potential on brush. I actually feel the diagonal shou...

Havn't taken any of the courses but Tom Brown also puts out a sereis of books that are helpful. You might also want to check out www.therangersdigest.com They have a series of books for sale but even the comeon freebies are well worth reading. Not particularly Tolkienish but well worth looking into.

The Ranger's Gear

Some of this has been covered here and on Meranger.com but we all have different ideas of some of the things we should carry on a several day trek.

What do you believe constitues Ranger's gear ?

What items will multi-task ?

What do you have or havn't but would like to see in a kit?

I tried the oatcakes the other day and while eatable, even with cinnimon and sugar, it's not a culinary delight. The only good thing about it is it can travel for a day or two. If you fry them up in the morning, you can save some and eat them on the trail without having to relight a fire. Unfortunat...

In any group there are people who would take an instrument over an extra food ration, but for the rest of us musically challanged there's always, tapping out a beat with my horn spoon against the bottom of my horn cup or tin plate, beating the pommel of my knife against the log I'm resting by or jus...

I wanted it big, so the dimensions are closer to 18 x 16x 8. I figured you can always put less in it, but wanted the extra room just in case. In hind sight I would have made it in more pieces and had more seems as the glue and the stitching would add a little more rigidity to the pack. Would love to...
