I have it on the recommendation of a trusted friend that Viking Leather Crafts produces some fine boots. Certainly at the listed prices, I can see little to complain about!

Re: Indy Moot 2011 - RECAP and PICS Now Included
Yes indeed, 'twas a grand time. In fact, rather so busy enjoying ourselves I think hardly any photos were really taken!

The "Santo"
I just finished up a piece destined for the upcoming Indiana Moot and thought I'd debut it here. As it has some likeness to both seax and tanto I'm perhaps coining the portmanteau "santo." The blade is hollow-ground 6150 with bronze fittings. Length overall is 13" with a 8 3/4" b...

Re: Favourite Knife
Whats your favourite knife? For what? :) I mean it's a reasonable question. So many knives, so many things to do with them! My everyday carry is a SOG Flash II . For field work I usually have a Cold Steel Bushman or one of my own pieces. For combat? Hands down I'll take a Circassian/Caucasian/Georg...

Re: Pocket sticks
...I found something called a pocket stick or a yawara stick. ...It got me thinking why there wouldn't be a european equivilent. The simple answer is that wherever there are people with fists, there are fistloads. While I cannot think of a systematized European form precisely equivalent to Yawara-j...

Re: Indy Moot 2011
What's the word on shelter construction? Will it be permissible to cut brush/saplings and the like or is this to be very low impact?

Re: Ranger Fitness?
Some of the differences we're having may be simply semantic, or at least in our definition of "weight training." There's no doubt that weights and overloading increase body response, but powerflifting, modern standardized weight sets (including kettlebells) or machines to me seem incrongru...

Re: Ranger Fitness?
The problem with developing any "comprehensive fitness plan" is that one must first determine the goal of the end user. I'm not sure that's been directly addressed, and I don't believe that the approaches of either the modern military or Olympiads are wholly appropriate for a Middle-Earth-...

Re: Defending the Hill
Firstly, the design of the hillfort should be a hybrid of the two images provided, or else an entirely different plan. You would want either a round wall (which has the greatest ratio of interior space to exterior area) or a square one (with corner towers, permitting far better arc of fire). The str...

Re: Ranger Fitness?
You are correct! That was indeed my (mis)conception! I am intrigued. Please tell us more about the philosophy of parkour! I've alluded to this already, but while Parkour isn't a neatly defined holistic discipline, it is comprised of practices and values which invariably translate to a differi...

Re: Ranger Fitness?
Hmmm, not sure that parkour is really a viable option for some of us. Ringulf, Pete and I are all over 50. There is a common (mis)conception that Parkour is about jumping off rooftops and vaulting over cars. This is an image perpetrated by film, television, and YouTube (how shocking!), is represent...

Re: Ranger Fitness?
As warriors and woodsmen we need a combination of these things. Explosive power can be used in a fight, negotiating severe obstacles and on the battlefield as an archer (think sprinting from cover to cover). The traditional cardio is also what keeps you in the game during long battles and traversin...

Re: Indy Moot 2011
Site looks great! I am inclined towards the second weekend (11-13th) as it will be a Full Moon, and as well I won't be so caught off guard when I flip the calendar and realize I haven't found all my gear yet! The 4-6th would be my second choice, and I'd prefer not to consider the end of the month as...

Re: dark, 21 inch, teardrop cross section, axe handles
I've not often come across the longer handles, and when I do, they seem too thin in section. There are some makers out there that will do custom handles , but they're pricey. So just get yourself a shaving horse and draw out some appropriately-sized handles. Easiest and cheapest way, really! :) Or, ...

Re: How to make riveted Chain Maile
I suddenly imagine my first ever and amateur chain mail. In which I used old wire coat hangers to make them into rings by twirling them. I would then link them with the use of pliers. Solder each link and at that time I have a wicked / bad / serious chain mail. Turns out, there are tons of instruct...
