Re: Those of you using "arrow socks" in your quivers...
Ah - that makes sense Greg. I've certainly noticed with this design that it's VERY protective of the arrows: somewhat more than my modern(ish) back quiver, and a great deal more than a real medieval arrow bag. One could certainly spin a just-so story about these leather-and-fabric back quivers being...

Lessons learned, springtime walk
It's been a wonderful week: after a couple years of full-tilt work and only using vacation time for family emergencies, I finally managed to take a few days off to just rest and recuperate. I've got a fair amount of rangery crafting in, and just took a short hike with my starting-to-be-almost-comple...

Those of you using "arrow socks" in your quivers...
... can you replace an arrow while wearing your quiver? I'm finally getting my quiver alllllmost there, and while it's not done, it's far enough along I can start experimenting a bit. The first thing I noticed of course is that while the sock is great for muffling the arrows and keeping them from jo...

That looks great! I bet you can't wait to finally get the thing off your workbench and into the woods.

Re: Numenorean design motifs
OH MY GOD SOMEONE ACTUALLY MADE THE CARPET!!!!! norbu-rugs-numenorean-carpet.jpg https://twitter.com/NorbuRugs/status/508495861983088640 Honestly, it looks a lot better than I would have expected. I fear I'd always thought the drawing itself a nice collection of motifs, but rather chaotic and unplea...

Neat historical archery site!
I just ran across this looking for information on historically appropriate blunt points for - as I have learned not it's called - "woods roving." :) He has lots of pretty well contstructed experiments it looks like on the capabilities of old British warbows: http://markstretton.blogspot.co...

Re: feedback on leather stamps? (design elements of Eriador)
Last couple test stamps came in today - I think I got the leather a bit too spongy for nice crisp images, but they're working well on the arbor. Sometime in the future I think I may do a separate stamp for connecting vines, but so far so good.

Re: A Quandary Over Buckles
Quiver buckles in bronze came this morning - very happy! :) I made them a tight fit for a 1.25" strap, figuring I could taper the tail a bit if I wanted more room. I wanted to avoid the wide pokey wings of the film buckles, and I think this profile is a nice compromise between flair and functio...

Re: Stump shooting?
Thanks gentlemen! Well, that settles that. I've been lucky so far - most of the stumps on our property are fairly rotted, so while I've had a couple tips lost I've not broken any arrows yet. Still I'll try getting some blunts for my modern arrows and see how that goes. Has anyone tried period blunt ...

Re: Interesting 16th c. jackware flask
Hunh - I see it now. Interesting efficiency of materials. I wonder how often/how well that top leg actually gets filled though? And I wonder how the cords were used?
What an odd, interesting design.

Re: Interesting 16th c. jackware flask
Hunh. Sometimes it's the real stuff that's the weirdest.
Do we know what it was for? How big it is?
The handle and base remind me somewhat of 18th c. fire buckets, but it's obviously not that.
Liquid? gunpowder? weird!

Re: Checking the waters: handwoven blankets?
Udwin - thank you! I'll certainly keep that in mind! caedmon - Time frame - I'm only now talking with vendors, and I can't imagine anything being ready before fall. Certainly I wouldn't want to take money before I had a blanket in hand and ready to ship out. Running the very rough estimate numbers I...

Checking the waters: handwoven blankets?
I've just gotten our first batch of wool in from our Icelandic sheep, and I'm starting to explore having it processed into blankets. From the numbers I'm getting so far, they wouldn't be cheap: probably much like other hand-weavers (Wilde, Stone, Baker) we're looking at several hundred dollars per. ...

Revisting the text - it's been so long!
Of late, I’ve wanted to clean my mind a bit from the PJ movies and renew my acquaintance with Middle-earth as written.. After some weeks of listening to the unabridged audiobooks most evenings, I’ve finally finished the trilogy. While the story is still fresh in mind, I thought I’d write down ...
