Re: Hunting on the Go

I'm watching Les Stroud "Survivorman" on TV, and I made a connection that might be interesting. This is a new series called "Beyond Survival" in which he visits tribal people and hunts with them. He's following some tribals in New Guinea and he notes that they gather while they h...

Re: question on bows

Yes, I now call it a "Hobbit Bow". 3 Rivers Archery obviously has a large halfling clientele. ;)

Some information about this weapon:

Re: question on bows

I got a question, though. Many of these "longbows" that are sold, have a 29" draw, and come with the proviso to not draw the bow past 29". For someone like me, at 6' 2", this does not come to an anchor point. So that's not really what is traditionally called a longbow. It ce...

Re: question on bows

I'm going to save up for the Faux Yew longbow from Rudder. It looks more like the classic, even with horn tips.

That last one is a leuku, I think. Very similar to one I have, very handy.

Re: question on bows

I think everyone has their own styles. I prefer a longbow but want a smaller one such as Aragorn carried as I use the sword more. Some like recurve bows too. Of course, in the books, Aragorn didn't use a bow. :) I don't recall too much description of the bows used by the Ithilien Rangers (or Elves ...

Re: question on bows

Rudder Bows has a "Ranger Bow" but it doesn't say that it can be safely drawn to more than 28". I envision a true longbow for a Ranger...

Re: New Boots!

On the other hand, you've got something like Native American moccasins. They can also be quite tall, but they are designed differently. First off, they're lightweight and the leather is relatively thin and pliable. They're not designed to hold themselves up, but rather, to be laced up the leg, whic...

Re: Hunting on the Go

Hunting game by any means tends to slow you down no matter what. You have to stop to clean, skin and butcher the beast, and conjure a fire to cook it. Doing this with small game is relatively less bother than dealing with a deer, unless you are with a group. Rabbits (jackrabbits, Rik?) live in predi...

Ranger base layer

My next project is to put together a regular Ranger outfit, one that is reasonably true to the Lore, but also practical for wilderness adventuring. I do have an array of authentic medieval (mostly Anglo-Saxon/Viking) garb, FWIW. I know that keeping a layer of cotton or linen next to the skin is of l...

Re: Ranger Beads

I'm familiar with those from military practice and they are useful. Things happen out the field, where you might lose track of your count.

However, it inspires me that different color "pony" beads could be issued when a Ranger shows that he has learned a required skill.

Thanks! I'm pretty accustomed to walking in leather soles.
