Re: Southern Wisconsin Trek 2017 Recap
Wow! Wonderful lists and hints you guys! Thank you all so much! :) yMy current bedroll setup functions fine in general, but it showed some weaknesses after 23 miles. I've worried/wondered about that. My old colonial-era bedroll could be moved around quite a bit as the miles wore on and one part of m...

Re: When does a Dunedain use Sindarin vs. Westron?
I imagine that young men of the Dunedain would use the words of elf-kind to charm the maids of the village of Bree. No wonder those Breelanders hate the Rangers! :D Ken Ha! I'd not be surprised. :) Mightn't they have used Adunaic when discussing sensitive matters? I don't think so - Westron itself ...

Re: Trail occupations?
FWIW, iron vessels are beautiful for being able to get a nice sear on meat prior to throwing in stew fixings and water. Not to say you can't take a separate folding skillet or even just sharpen a stick, but being able to settle an iron vessel in the coals without worrying about solder melting out is...

Re: Trail occupations?
I doubt I (or rather my persona, I suppose) would ever be on a war party, but I could imagine travelling with rangers if circumstances demanded it. I know I'd be more burden than asset to fast-moving warriors. I can do the stoic "just keep walking" thing though, so there's that. :) Decent ...

Oh that looks like a grand time!!
I see a reference to foraging and something green and fresh in the cookpots: might I ask what those leaves are?

Re: When does a Dunedain use Sindarin vs. Westron?
Hrm - yes, you gentlemen are probably right about drawing unwanted attention in common places, that's a good point. I had wondered if there was any Sindarin spoken between Aragorn and Halbarad while amongst the Rohirrim, but didn't see any doing a quick skim. I don't think Quenya would be used - IIR...

Re: Custom Seax
Come on baby.... :) Also... THREAD DRIFT ALERT. Lastly, just wanted to say, I LOVE SCHOLA GLADIATORA! That guy's videos rock! I just ran across another REALLY informative dude on youTube - his lectures assume some basic knowledge I don't have, so I can only follow about half of it - but he's obvious...
Re: Cobbler?
Cool! I think I missed the original post: since the images appear to be gone, can I ask what the construction is like? It's a turnshoe, but there's a welt between the sole and body? And then you (intended to) sew a second sole onto the welt? Is that correct? ... and until recently, you had the welt ...

When does a Dunedain use Sindarin vs. Westron?
Recently I was remembering a discussion of the HBO "Rome" miniseries, and how an important aspect of the culture was left out merely by virtue of it being filmed in English. That is: the upper classes were educated in Greek, and so if they wished to discuss matters amongst themselves witho...

Re: Custom Seax
That does make sense: I doubt you'll ever need to chop kindling in a desperate hurry. :) I did run across an interesting dialog recently about people using daggers vs. small shields in the offhand a while back. For those who haven't seen it already: aI-zSSoiWvk "What's best for what when" ...

Oh that *is* cool! I can't wait to see it open!
I kind of like how we're starting to drift in similar directions as we sort things out with use. Makes everything seem more... culturally cohesive I guess is the words I'm looking for.
Also... new cordial bottle? what what?

Oh that's great! The whole belt is carved? I like it!
Amazing how a bit of complexity can make everything look less costumy and more real.
