Re: Medieval "Pants"

It looks like GDFB no longer carries these wool pants. Or else they're very counter-intuitive to find on their site. I searched the forums and found that link you mentioned, and Dark Knight still carries them, in Natural (dye-able) or Brown.

Re: Leatherworking Projects

I like going to antique stores and poking around for buckles. I've made some great finds (pre-aged  ), and super cheap! I've already made one quiver that I've been very happy with for an over-the shoulder. Quivers are daunting at first; mostly because they take so much leather, which is exp...

Re: Leatherworking Projects

I'd start with the belt. Unless you're going for something pretty ornate, belts are super easy. Even some of the more complicated ones are fairly simple and don't take a *ton* of skill. For a beginner, I'd do belt first, then bracers, then the sheaths, then the quiver, then gorget, then the gauntlet...

Re: Sword Preference?

There are descriptions of dwarves in full war gear in The Hobbit and The Silmarillion , but I don't remember the specifics of what their armor was, except that in The Silmarillion they wore "war masks" (I imagine them being something like the masks samurai wear) that made them look extra f...

Re: Leatherworking Projects

I found those bracers a while back too. I love the look of them; especially the sort of leaf shape the knives sheath makes. But before you run off and make them, think of how they'll function first. My largest concern with these is that if you're a right-handed archer, you'll be a right-handed knife...

Re: Sword Preference?

As I mentioned in the discussion on axes, I like the items in my kit to have multiple functions, if possible. My brand of ranger travels light and compact, without a lot of stuff hanging off or flopping around, and nothing too cumbersome. I've hiked a lot, and can't tell you how joyous it is to be a...

Re: Tracking

On Awareness: All great advice. I was lucky enough to have a bowhunter for a dad, so I started learning young. A mentor is a great thing to have, if you can find one. Like learning a foreign language (which, to wax poetic, you're doing: the "language of the Wilds"), immersion is key. Get o...

Re: Leather Boot & Jerkin Projects

As one who works in leather and gets paid for it, I have to say that is a spectacular jerkin. Excellent work. And the boots promise to be spectacular as well. Well done (salutes).

Re: Archer's glove

How thick is the leather you use for the bracer? I have made one, but was wondering if one could combine an archer's bracer and a warrior's vambrace. Maybe reinforce it with splints? Or simply cuir boulli? By the Sword makes leather armour arms for SCA combat archers; this is what they look like: h...

Re: Archer's glove

Can't blame a fellow ranger for sneaking up on you, can ya? ;) Thank you for the welcome! Some of my background... I stumbled across this forum while looking for "ranger" images to show my upcoming Ranger Corps (little scheme I'm working on. This site has been great for inspiration) and gi...

Re: Axes

I believe that for a ranger, it's all about traveling light while at the same time being prepared for almost anything. Therefore, practicality is absolute key. When putting together my kit, I try to look at each item and ask, "how many uses can I get out of this?" Stacking functions is a g...

Re: Medieval "Pants"

A good inexpensive way is to buy or use an old Karate gi pants, preferably a few sizes larger. Dye the pants brown, green or grey, add some leather knee protectors and away you go. If you get the gi pants they make specifically for Judo or Jujitsu, the knees are already reinforced (a handy feature ...

Re: Archer's glove

I would like to echo the general praise for Gondian, and I've got a couple of answers to questions posted on this topic. First off, if you're looking for excellent gloves for the base of your archer's bracer, I recommend you visit your local rock climbing shop and get a pair of belaying gloves. They...
